NCSA Championship finalist Johnny Macko has announced his verbal commitment to swim for Brown University beginning in the fall of 2027.
“I’m incredibly excited to announce my verbal commitment to the admissions process at Brown University to continue my academic and athletic career! First, I want to thank my family, teachers, coaches and friends for supporting me throughout this journey. I also want to thank my teammates for making every practice fun and always making me laugh. Big shoutout to Coach Kevin and Coach Matt for giving me this opportunity! I can’t wait to be part of this amazing team. Go Bruno!!!”
A junior at Wellington C. Mepham High School in New York, Macko has been a member of the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District’s swimming and diving team since his freshman year. In addition to swimming for Bellmore-Merrick, he currently trains year-round with Long Island Aquatic Club, where he primarily specializes in distance free.
Macko qualified for the NYSPHSAA (New York State Public High School Athletic Association) championships the past two seasons in a row. At the 2026 NYSPHSAA Boys Federation Championship in early March, he took home the championship title in the 500 free (4:28.31) and snagged the runner-up spot in the 200 free (1:39.47), setting new personal best times in both events.
At the 2026 NCSA Spring Championships in March, Macko earned a second swim in the 500 free and logged three lifetime best times. He placed 6th in the 1650 free (15:15.35 – PB), 7th in the 1000 free (9:03.64 – PB), 17th in the 500 free (4:27.35 – PB) and 40th in the 200 free (1:40.69).
Most recently, Macko competed at the LIAC Speedo Long Island Meet (LCM), where he turned in a series of strong performances. He won the 1500 free (16:19.15) and placed 6th in the 200 free (1:57.78 – PB) and 11th in the 400 free (4:11.39 – SB). He also contested the 100 free (57.83), 100 breast (1:16.27), 200 breast (2:39.31) and 400 IM (4:50.16).

Based on the results from the 2026 Ivy League Championships, Macko would have placed 12th in the 1650 free and landed in the ‘C’ final in the 200 free, giving him a chance to score some points right from the start.
On the team itself, Macko would have ranked 3rd in the 1000 free, 4th in the 1650 free, 5th in the 500 free and 7th in the 200 free this past season. With another full season to go before he arrives on campus, it remains to be seen exactly how the roster will shake out, but Macko looks to be in a position to be a strong contributor for Brown.
Currently set to join Macko in Brown’s class of 2031 are Alen Cindric, Ethan Landon and Henry Holtan, who should all make for strong training partners over their four years together.
