Denver Broncos quarterback Bo Nix is doing well after he had a post-surgical cleanup procedure last week, which surprised many people after the team’s previous timeline suggested he would be fully ready to participate in the team’s offseason program which began on Monday.
The cleanup procedure was reportedly planned ahead of time, but it changed Denver’s initial outlook on when Nix would be ready to return. He’s not far off, according to Sean Payton.
Denver Broncos QB Bo Nix will be full go for training camp, could participate in minicamp
Sean Payton got ahead of the question on Saturday after the team wrapped up their second day of rookie minicamp, addressing Bo Nix’s recent cleanup procedure and the outlook on when he might be back on the field for football-related activities.
“He’s doing great,” Payton said after practice. “He’ll be well ahead of time for training camp. I think there’s a good chance we see him in this offseason program in June. We’re going to be the ones kind of holding him back, if you will. The follow-up procedure was not a surprise. I was just talking to [Vice President of Player Health & Performance] Beau [Lowery]. We had five other players that staged surgeries, where there’s a step, they evaluate and then a second step. We had five. [Nix] was the sixth that actually went through that. No surprises. We feel real good about where he is at. You guys will have a chance to see it here in a few weeks, but clearly full speed by training camp. We just want to be smart relative to holding him back a little.”
Bo’s ultra competitive, and it’s easy to envision him trying to do more than he should, but being smart with his on-field reps, whenever that does take place, will be important. It may not be until mandatory minicamp that we actually see Bo on the field throwing, but Payton reiterated that Nix will be full go, no limitations, well before the team reports for training camp at the end of July. That’s what ultimately matters.
“Without trying to, I think we have a round of OTAs, a round of OTAs, a set of mini camp practices,” Payton said. “You guys know from watching, those kind of look the same. The only difference in the mini camp is the meeting time can be a little longer on the field, but it’s the same tempo. He’s going to want to push that earlier. I’m probably… We’ll be smart with [Vice President of Player Health & Performance] Beau [Lowery], and the trainers and the doctors. You’ll see him. I’m sure you’ll see him in probably mini camp maybe, but he’ll be full speed throwing everything in July before we even get back here. He’s doing good.”
Earlier this week, the Broncos reported for their offseason program, which is nothing but weight room, conditioning, and meeting room focused on players. Nix has been in the building where he’s going through rehab with Lowery and the training staff, while working an upper-body program, getting himself ready for when he steps back on the field.
For this weekend’s minicamp, the Broncos had two quarterbacks throwing. E.J. Warner, the son of Kurt Warner, and veteran Nathan Peterman. For OTAs and minicamp in June, there’s always a possibility of adding another quarterback to the roster, but it would more than likely be aligned with what they see from Warner and Peterman, more than it would have to do with Nix’s injury.
“It means look, we have 90 [roster spots], so it is possible you can bring someone back in on a trial basis for the mini camp,” Payton said. “Yet generally with those practices, two [quarterbacks] is not a problem. It would be more of an issue if you felt a player was going to be a PUP in training camp, and that’s not going to be the case. I’m not saying we couldn’t sign an additional quarterback. We’ve discussed it, but really more in terms of, ‘Do we see something in these two guys?”
With rookie minicamp in the books, we’ll see the Broncos on the field on June 2 for the start of OTAs with veterans and rookies reporting.
