Family, friends and fellow officers from around the country filed into St. Andrew’s Greek Orthodox Church in Chicago’s Edgewater neighborhood Friday to honor fallen CPD Officer John Bartholomew.
Bartholomew, 38, was killed in the line of duty last month.
“It’s as if an angel has left the earth,” his brother James Bartholomew said in his remarks at his funeral. “I am eternally grateful that God gave me 38 years on this earth with my brother. His love, his stewardship and his memory will be with us forever.”
James Bartholomew said he spoke with his brother often about the dangers of the job, but said Bartholomew understood the gravity of being a police officer, and was willing to give his life to keep others safe.
He leaves behind dozens of family members, including his wife Renee and their three children Oliver, Myles and Sophia.
“To his children… your father was a hero. His legacy will live on,” CPD Supt. Larry Snelling said during his remarks. “Your hero gave his life doing work that others run from, that others fear doing.”
Commanders from the 17th and 24th district where Bartholomew worked for nearly 11 years also gave remarks during the service, remembering the veteran officer for his sharp, witty sense of humor, the strong bonds he formed with coworkers and his ability to make everyone feel important– victims, officers and offenders alike.
“We will all be better officers and better people because of John Bartholomew,” said 24th District Commander Alison Christian. “He was a gift. His smile, his laugh, his kindness, his walk – we will never ever forget him. John we love you, we miss you and we will take it from here.”
Commander Jesse Alvarez echoed similar sentiments.
“The best way we can honor John is not just in words, but in action,” he said. “We will carry him with us every time we face the unknown, and every time we choose courage over comfort.”
Metropolitan Nathanael of Chicago gave the hierarchical Eulogy Friday.
Snelling said Bartholomew’s partner Officer Nelson Crespo, who was shot and critically injured that same day, is improving in the hospital but has a long road ahead.
