Rookie Minicamp Begins! A Draft Pick and One UDFA to Watch, Is Slot WR a Need? And Other Bears Bullets ...Middle East

Day 109 of the Chicago Bears offseason. Bring on the rookie minicamp shenanigans!

ICYMI: The Bears made it officially official by signing four of their 2026 NFL Draft picks and adding 13 undrafted free agents. I do not imagine a scenario in which safety Dillon Thieneman, center Logan Jones, and tight end Sam Roush are camp holdouts. Hence, I am unbothered about those three being the only unsigned Bears picks. It’ll happen when it happens. Here is a look at who’s in town for rookie minicamp:

— Brad Biggs (@BradBiggs) May 8, 2026 Zavion Thomas is the Day 2 pick I’m looking forward to seeing the most when training camp and preseason games get underway later in the summer. Thomas might not get a ton of wide receiver reps early, but I can see him working his way into a bigger role as the year goes along in a way similar to what we saw from Jahdae Walker last year. One way to fast-track your way to bigger and better things is by making a good impression at the rookie minicamp. With the dust settled on the 2026 NFL Draft, ESPN’s Aaron Schatz lists “slot receiver” as the biggest remaining hole on the Bears:

The Bears use a lot of two tight-end sets. However, they still were in 11 personnel 52% of the time last season, so they need to have a third starting receiver to go with Rome Odunze and Luther Burden III. Right now, that’s veteran Kalif Raymond, but Raymond is 31 and has had less than 300 yards in each of the past two seasons. The other alternative is third-round rookie Zavion Thomas. Deebo Samuel would be a really interesting free agent signing here.

Not an edge rusher who could be an upgrade over Austin Booker. Or a defensive tackle who can push the pocket and stop the run. Not even a cornerback who you’d feel good starting opposite Jaylon Johnson. But a slot receiver. That’s the Bears’ biggest need — really? Maybe we should take this as a sign that Chicago’s roster construction is healthy. As for the Deebo Samuel mention, we’ll dig into that later today. A fun quote (via The Athletic) from Thomas: “I play the game with a different type of aggression, with a different mentality.” Mandatory Credit: Steve Roberts-Imagn Images Among the players in the 13-man UDFA class, Miller Moss is the player I have the highest hopes for this summer. To be clear, I don’t think Moss will usurp Tyson Bagent or Case Keenum on the depth chart. But I do believe Moss has the potential to make training camp and preseason games fun. Unearthing the fun exhibition season quarterback ranks third on my summertime Bears to-do checklist behind (1) Stay Healthy and (2) Look Competent. The Tribune’s Brad Biggs reports (via Twitter/X) on the five veterans in for tryouts during Bears rookie minicamp: WR Scotty Miller, WR Montrell Washington, S Anthony Johnson, LB Jon Rhattigan, and LB Amari Burney. Colleague Patrick K. Flowers recently wrote about Miller making his way to Halas Hall.

It was a bummer to see the news that the Bears waived cornerback Zah Frazier. A fifth-round pick in 2025, Frazier spent last season on the non-football injury list due to personal reasons. Frazier had the speedy and lanky profile that Bears Defensive Coordinator Dennis Allen tends to like out of his cornerbacks, which had me intrigued by the Day 3 pick’s potential. Unfortunately, we won’t see if Frazier will reach it in Chicago. But with that being said, Frazier’s departure sends a clear sign to the other cornerbacks that there is a job to be won this summer. Good luck to all competitors in the arena. This is a fun way to look at the Bears draft class:

My comps for #Bears draft picks:• Dillon Thieneman: Antoine Bethea• Logan Jones: Drew Dalman• Sam Roush: Daniel Bellinger• Zavion Thomas: D’Wayne Eskridge• Malik Muhammad: Renardo Green• Keyshaun Elliott: Tahir Whitehead• Jordan van den Berg: Early Jay Ratliff

— Jacob Infante (@jacobinfante24) May 8, 2026 FOX Sports Writer Ben Arthur lists the Green Bay Packers on his list of the NFL’s best defenses entering the offseason training program. I wasn’t expecting the Bears to be on this list right now. However, I found it noteworthy to see several 2026 Bears opponents (Seahawks, Eagles, Patriots, Packers, Panthers) make the cut. The offense will have its work cut out for it this season. But so long as Ben Johnson is calling the shots, I’m a believer. The Cubs completed a four-game sweep against the Cincinnati Reds in a manner that might make the visitors from Ohio think that the same-old Redlegs are back. Meanwhile, the Northsiders have won 15 consecutive home games. What a run! Over at BN Bulls, our friends in the BN Basketball Department have their final pre-lottery first-round NBA Mock Draft. Roman Kantserov has reportedly made a decision about his future with the Chicago Blackhawks.
