ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Amateur rugby players from across New York are gathering in the Rochester area this weekend to honor one of their own, lost to suicide.
The third annual Meg’s Memorial Rugby Tournament will take place at Aardvark Park on Saturday. News10NBC’s Tom Kowalski spoke with organizers about why this event is so special.
The tournament honors rugby player Megan Trutt, who took her own life three years ago. It aims to raise money for suicide prevention.
“This weekend is going to be our third annual Megs Memorial Tournament. It’s a tournament that we, the Rochester Renegades, host every year,” said Hanna Emminger, lead organizer of the tournament.
While she didn’t personally know Meg, that doesn’t mean she puts any less effort into respecting her memory.
“Personally, it’s my favorite thing that this club does. It brings all of the Rochester community together. We get so many companies and individuals donating… Everyone at some point in their life has been touched by someone with a mental health crisis or someone who’s struggling. So it’s really important from so many perspectives for our team,” Emminger said.
This year, the tournament is gathering 13 teams from across Western and Central New York. Organizers are aiming to beat last year’s goal of $7,000 raised for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s Western New York chapter. The Foundation then uses the money for things like prevention and education programs, research, and support for those who’ve lost someone to suicide.
“So [the Foundation] spend the day tabling as well and sharing resources and all that. So we work directly with them to make sure that goes back into our local community and through the greater Western New York Foundation for Suicide Prevention,” Emminger said.
The tournament kicks off at Aardvark Park at 10 a.m. Saturday. The event is happening rain or shine.
