I began writing this post about Tyrique Stevenson possibly being on the hot seat before news broke of the Chicago Bears’ placement of 2025 NFL Draft pick Zah Frazier on waivers. Nevertheless, the greater point of this post still stands. The cornerbacks room is going to feature some prominent battles, including one that likely includes Stevenson.
Tyrique Stevenson, who has gained valuable experience during his first three years with the Chicago Bears, could be pushed out of the starting lineup in 2026.
In a post identifying veterans who could be pushed for starting gigs, ESPN’s Ben Soalk explains why Stevenson’s spot could be on the line after what the Bears did during the 2026 NFL Draft:
It was to the Bears’ benefit, as they snagged a potential day one starter with No. 124. Finding a depth cornerback to replace the outgoing Nahshon Wright was critical, as Stevenson’s volatile play alongside Jaylon Johnson’s injury history all but guarantees the No. 3 corner will see time in Chicago. Stevenson in particular struggled last season, his first under defensive coordinator Dennis Allen; Stevenson’s 9.8 yards per target allowed ranked third worst among all cornerbacks (minimum 50 targets).
Seeing that nugget about Tyrique Stevenson coughing up 9.8 yards per target allowed, which ranked as the third-worst among NFL cornerbacks who faced at least 50 targets, definitely set off some alarm bells in my head. As are these numbers from Pro Football Focus, who share Stevenson’s rankings in coverage data among the 75 NFL cornerbacks who played at least 345 coverage snaps last year:
PFF COVERAGE GRADE: 62.3 (46h) TARGETED RATE: 18.2% (69th) RECEIVING YARDS ALLOWED: (57th) CATCH RATE ALLOWED: 61.5% (39th) YARDS ALLOWED PER COVERAGE SNAP: 1.73 (74th) EXPLOSIVE PASS PLAYS ALLOWED: 15 (tied-58th) EXPLOSIVE PASS PLAYS ALLOWED RATE 4.2% (73rd)In all of the categories above, Tyrique Stevenson ranked below the middle of the pack when graded amongst his peers. Yikes! No wonder Soalk sees Stevenson as someone who should be looking over their shoulder. Based on the data above and the inconsistency in the production department, his job could be up for grabs.

Tyrique Stevenson might be the front-runner to start at cornerback opposite Jaylon Johnson. And if he is, I can understand why. Stevenson gained worthwhile starting experience in his first three seasons. He has shown a nose for the ball and a flair for the dramatic. Unfortunately, Stevenson is best known for his gaffe against the Washington Commanders on the infamous Fail Mary, even though the cornerback has made some big plays on the positive side of the ledger and has played well in stretches.
However, those stretches of solid play from Stevenson have been streaky. And because the good times haven’t been consistent, we could see someone who should have locked in a starting job by now get challenged for a spot when training camp opens in the summertime.
TYRIQUE STEVENSON’S DISAPPEARING ACT RAISES QUESTIONS IN BEARS SECONDARY
For instance, Malik Muhammad could play his way into a starting role. The Day 3 pick from the University of Texas has the type of profile that Bears Defensive Coordinator Dennis Allen traditionally likes in young cornerbacks. Terell Smith, who was taken in the same 2023 NFL Draft class that produced Stevenson, could also play his way into consideration. I wouldn’t even rule out the possibility of Chicago kicking the tires on a street free agent or inquiring about a cornerback who might be a change of scenery candidate. Mike Hughes (Atlanta Falcons), Chamarri Connor (Kansas City Chiefs), and Marlon Humphrey (Baltimore Ravens) are cornerbacks mentioned alongside Tyrique Stevenson as also possibly being on the hot seat.
In the end, I expect that the competition throughout OTAs, minicamps, training camp and the preseason will ultimately reveal a worthy starter for the Bears at cornerback. It very well could be Tyrique Stevenson, who is set to become a free agent after the season and could use his final year in Chicago to launch his stock before hitting the open market. But given his history, you can understand why there might be (and, arguably, should be) an open competition at his position.
