Only three games in the Cubs minor league system on Wednesday as the Knoxville Smokies were rained out, but we still had plenty of excitement! Pedro Ramirez came up clutch in Iowa’s extra-innings win, and South Bend used a big inning to come out on top in their matchup. Let’s get to it.

Triple-A Iowa Cubs
It was a defensive battle on Wednesday in the Iowa Cubs 3-2 win over the Columbus Clippers (Guardians). Early on in this one, we got web gems from both Kevin Alcántara and Pedro Ramirez. Alcántara showed off his arm, throwing a runner out trying to take second base in the top of the first. Then, in the top of the fourth, Ramirez flashed the leather, making a diving stop with two outs and runners on the corners, keeping this game scoreless.
Charlie Burns was quite good on the mound, but he didn’t get any run support, though, and unfortunately, his five scoreless innings left him with a no-decision.
The scoring finally started in the sixth. With one out and a runner on third, BJ Murray finally helped Iowa scrape a run across with a sac fly. That 1-0 lead lasted until the top of the eighth, when Columbus was able to tie the game up off Gabe Klobosits on an RBI single.
The game went to extras, where the Cubs and Clippers would trade runs in the 10th. Iowa’s run came on a Christian Bethancourt RBI single. In the top of the 11th, Luke Little kept Columbus off the board. Then, in the bottom half, Pedro Ramirez played the hero with runners on the corners and no one out, walking off the Clippers with a game-winning RBI single.

High-A South Bend Cubs
Much like the Iowa Cubs, South Bend picked up another win over the Lansing Lugnuts (Athletics) behind some solid pitching and timely hitting. This one was a pitcher’s duel for most of the game, with the first five innings being scoreless. Koen Moreno got the start for South Bend and tossed four scoreless innings, allowing two hits, two walks, and striking out five. Jackson Brockett took over for Moreno and threw two dominant innings, striking out five of the six hitters he faced.
With the game scoreless in the bottom of the sixth, the Cubs finally broke through. After Cam Sisneros drew a leadoff walk, Cole Mathis stepped up to the plate and belted a two-run homer, breaking the scoreless tie and making it 2-0 South Bend. Later in the inning, Kade Snell got on with a single, stole second, and was brought in to score on a Drew Bowser double. Just like that, 0-0 turned into 3-0.
The Lugnuts would add a run in the eighth and get the go-ahead run to the plate in the ninth, but South Bend held on to win with Ethan Bell picking up the save.

Myrtle Beach suffered the lone loss of the day for the minor league squads – a 4-2 defeat at the hands of the Hickory Crawdads. The game started out similarly to Iowa’s and South Bend’s games. The first three innings went scoreless before the Pelicans took a 1-0 lead in the fourth. With two outs and a runner on third, Geuri Lubo ripped a two-strike double to break the scoreless tie.
Unfortunately, that 1-0 lead didn’t last all that long. Pierce Coppola was outstanding through four innings of work, striking out five and allowing just two baserunners. But once he was pulled, the wheels fell off a bit for the Pelicans. Edwardo Melendez took over and allowed two runs in both the fifth and sixth innings. The 1-0 lead quickly became a 4-1 deficit.
In the ninth, Myrtle Beach got one back with a Michael Carico solo homer, but 4-2 was as close as they would get in this one.
