Upgrades at Mission Trails Regional Park enhance the visitor experience ...Middle East

News by : (Times of San Diego) -

Mission Trails Regional Park has seen a wave of improvements this spring, with new educational signage and important upgrades enhancing both visitor experience and accessibility.

One major highlight is the installation of new interpretive panels along the Oak Grove Loop Trail, part of a larger effort to make the park’s natural and cultural history more accessible to San Diego County’s residents and visitors.

Funded through a grant awarded to the nonprofit Mission Trails Regional Park Foundation, more than 40 panels are planned throughout the park. Each sign includes English and Spanish text, along with a QR code that links to additional translations in the region’s threshold languages.

So far, five panels have been installed along the Oak Grove Loop Trail, with additional signage for the Visitor Center Loop Trail currently in development.

The project was made possible through funding from the San Diego River Conservancy, a non-regulatory state agency, and the collaborative efforts of park staff and volunteers. The panels were designed by Tracy Meiners of Studio TM, with illustrations by Coyote Brush Studios. Visitors are encouraged to explore the Oak Grove area to experience the new installations firsthand.

In addition to these educational upgrades, the park has also completed a significant improvement project on the 320-foot-long bridge at the Clairemont Mesa Boulevard entrance. Park rangers and volunteers worked together to resurface the bridge, replacing old plywood planks to ensure a safer and more durable surface on the bridge.

The project involved installing 125 sheets of pressure-treated pine plywood, secured with approximately 3,040 wood screws.

Crews first removed old screws and power-washed years of buildup beneath the previous surface before carefully placing, leveling, and securing the new plywood.

The work was completed in three phases and finished on April 29 by a team that included MTRP park rangers, City grounds maintenance staff, and dedicated park volunteer Paul Klingenberg.

The bridge improvements were supported by $8,000 in materials funded through donations to the Mission Trails Regional Park Foundation, highlighting the important role community support plays in maintaining and enhancing the park.

Those interested in contributing to future projects can support the park by volunteering or making a tax-deductible donation to the Mission Trails Regional Park Foundation.
