IRONDEQUOIT, N.Y. — Irondequoit High School in the West Irondequoit School District is one of the top 100 high schools in the country for teaching personal finance for the 14th straight year.
Working in Support of Education, an award-winning education nonprofit gave the school the recognition. News10NBC’s Declan Stablow went to the school to learn more about what makes the program stand out.
The classes teach students financial skills they’ll need after graduation, like paying taxes, making a budget, buying insurance, taking out loans and buying a house. Marin Jaeger, a senior at Irondequoit High School, said the lessons helped her find the right college.
“I wouldn’t have been able to really make those solid decisions about finance and what kind of college I wanted to go to if it weren’t for this class and being able to choose which kind of career I would have supported, the debt that I would have been in post high school,” Jaeger said.
Louis DiCesare teaches personal finance classes at Irondequoit High School. He said he wishes he had classes like this when he was a student and had to learn the lessons he’s teaching through trial and error, costing him time and money.
“To learn about it now in high school gives them the foundation, the skills to help make them make real good informed financial decisions with the base of knowledge that will help them whatever path they take,” DiCesare said.
DiCesare shapes some of his lessons around his students’ real-world experiences. Students who work part time during the year receive their W-2s in the mail, and that’s the first lesson he does during the second semester.
“Knowing they just got their W-2s and we help walk them through how to complete a 1040 tax return form for their federal taxes,” DiCesare said.
Students even learn how to plan for retirement. DiCesare said it sounds crazy at the age of 16 or 17 years old to talk about the importance of retirement, but he thinks they get the message and the importance of doing it, especially these days.
Jaeger said the information the school’s personal finance classes teach is crucial. She wouldn’t have known this information otherwise because none of the other courses really cover that kind of information, like the basic core classes.
“So this is really huge for people that might not have the type of resources to get that information outside of this class,” Jaeger said.
Starting next year, personal finance classes will be a graduation requirement in New York. DiCesare said this was a long time coming, and Jaeger said even if the classes weren’t required, she’d recommend them.
Students in the school’s financial literacy courses also get the chance to be a part of DECA. It’s an international association that helps prepare students for careers in finance.
Last month, DiCesare and seven students were at DECA’s International Career Development Conference in Atlanta.
