ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Monroe and Genesee counties are getting a share of $23 million that New York State is allocating to help agencies collaborate to prevent domestic violence.

The state wants to expand the number of agencies involved in the Statewide Targeted Reductions in Intimate Partner Violence (STRIVE) initiative. The program trains officers and other public safety professionals on how to respond to domestic violence and encourages collaboration to protect victims. In its first year, the program trained more than 1,200 professionals.

Monroe County is getting $2.6 million among the Rochester Police Department, Greece Police Department, the sheriff’s office, the district attorney’s office, the probation department, and the Willow Domestic Violence Center. You can see a breakdown of the funding here.

As News10NBC has covered, domestic violence reports in Rochester are two and a half times higher than the state average. For Monroe County, it’s 1.6 times higher than the state average.

In March, RPD officers began asking domestic violence victims to complete an 11-question risk assessment, sharing the results with the STRIVE outreach team. In addition, the Willow Domestic Violence Center has broken ground on a new facility to provide legal help, counseling, and social services to survivors all under one roof.

Genesee County is getting $562,000 among the Batavia Police Department, the sheriff’s office, the district attorney’s office, the probation department, and the YWCA. Similar to Willow, the YWCA of Genesee County aims to provide a safe place for victims and has a 24-hour hotline.

The funding for the second year of STRIVE will go toward training, ensuring that strategies are tailored to community needs, and protecting survivors. It aims to double the number of police departments taking part to 42 across 17 counties. It also aims to increase the number of funded personnel to 110 full-time and 120 part-time positions.

If you or someone you know is a victim of domestic violence, you can call the 24-hour hotline for the Willow Domestic Violence Center in Monroe County at (585)-222-7233 or the YWCA in Genesee County at 585-343-7513. For immediate danger, always call 911.
