‘There’s no one way for every person’: How Rochester residents can grieve in a healthy way after a violent weekend ...Middle East

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Rochester’s community is still reeling after a violent weekend caused two deaths, including 14-year-old Zahnia Barr.

This week, the city has been providing counseling for those affected by Barr’s death at various free clinics across Rochester. News10NBC’s Tom Kowalski stopped by one of them to find out how people can grieve in a healthy way.

The David Gantt R-Center was chosen as one of the locations for free mental health counseling after Barr’s murder. Mayor Malik Evans said Barr spent much of her time there, and was “an active and cherished member.”

“When there are tragedies and things like that in the community, we provide crisis support like we’re here now,” Dr. Nina Ruffin said.

Dr. Nina Ruffin and Dr. Gretchen Mims are social workers with the counseling nonprofit BreathDeep Inc., which the City of Rochester contracted with to speak with the community at the R-Center.

Ruffin said officially, five people came in for free sessions – but they helped out more than that just by being present.

“I was in the hallway today. And when I was in the hallway today, I actually spoke with a total of three individuals when I was in the hallway, because we walk around the hallway just to make sure that we’re visible so people know that we’re here,” Mims said.

If people need a healthy way to grieve, Mims recommends speaking with someone like a family member or friend. They can journal, reach out to someone with an organization such as BreathDeep, or just really take some time for themselves and do whatever they need that’s healthy to help them heal and really get through this transitional period.

“And I think that’s what’s important. There’s no one way for every person. Some people are going to want to be to themselves. Some people don’t want to journal, some people are going to want to come together and, just comfort each other. And that might change from time to time,” Ruffin said.

There are no updates yet on the murder investigation.

BreathDeep also offers group counseling, trauma counseling and helps you get connected with needed services.
