Few things in sports seem as inevitable as end-of-the-year crowns for Oklahoma softball.
On Saturday, with a 6-4 win over No. 12 Texas A&M, the top-ranked Sooners clinched an outright SEC regular-season championship. The title marks a 14th consecutive season for the program with either a conference tournament title or a regular-season crown, dating back to the team’s time in the Big 12.
Patty Gasso’s Sooners have now won regular-season conference championships in 12 of the last 13 seasons. (The 2020 season was canceled early due to COVID.)
OU finished the regular season 20-4 in conference play, a game ahead of Alabama for the top seed in next week’s conference tournament. The Sooners will enter the postseason with a 48-7 record.

Oklahoma won the first game, 4-3. Kai Minor drove in the game-winning run in the sixth inning on a triple down the right field line.
Minor then homered on the fourth pitch of the rubber match, putting the Sooners up 1-0 early. Kasidi Pickering later launched a 3-run home run to give the Sooners a 4-0 advantage heading into the second inning.
OU added runs in the fifth and the sixth. A&M plated 4 in the bottom of the seventh as it tried to rally, but Audrey Lowry stepped in for the final 2 outs to end the game and pick up her third save of the evening.
Sydney Berzon pitched 5 innings of action for the win, striking out 5 while giving up just 2 hits.
Sydney Lessentine lasted just 2 innings before being pulled. She finished with 1 strikeout and 6 hits given up to pick up her fourth loss of the year.
The Sooners will open play at the conference tournament next Thursday in Lexington. OU will face the winner of Wednesday night’s game between 8-seed LSU and 9-seed Georgia.
