Two members of Sri Lanka’s Under-19 men’s cricket team have been granted bail by the Colombo Magistrate’s Court following their arrest over allegations of secretly filming individuals inside a hotel in Narahenpita. According to reports, including those from Sri Lanka Mirror, the players were released on two sureties of LKR 500,000 (approx INR 1.5 lac) each after being produced in court.
The arrests came earlier this week after complaints were made by women staying at Hotel Janaki, who alleged that they were being filmed while bathing. As per ESPNcricinfo, the police have since stated that the investigation is ongoing, and it is yet to be established how extensive the recordings are or whether any footage was shared online. Authorities have also indicated that some of the alleged material may involve male individuals as well.
The two players, who are reportedly students from Trinity College, Kandy, and Joseph Vaz College, were said to have been occupying the same room at the time of the alleged incident. As part of standard protocol with the Under-19 setup, players’ mobile phones are usually collected in the evening by team officials.
Investigation underway as Sri Lanka Cricket face turmoil
The case remains under investigation, with Narahenpita Police continuing to examine devices and gather evidence. The players are scheduled to appear in court again on May 25. At this stage, no formal conclusions have been drawn, and the allegations are yet to be proven in court.
Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has not yet announced any disciplinary action of its own. In recent days, the existing administration has been replaced, with the government stepping in to oversee operations through the Ministry of Sports following allegations of mismanagement and corruption.
A reform committee, which reportedly includes former captain Kumar Sangakkara, has been appointed to guide the transition. On the field, Sri Lanka’s men team will be in action from June 03 onwards. They travel to the West Indies for an extensive all-format series (3 ODIs, 3 T20Is and 2 Tests).
