I don’t know about you but the clutter of wires drives me crazy, behind the tv or at my desk, heck even out in the yard, nothing is worse than a rats nest of wires,m so that’s why when I had the opportunity to try this Nyrius Orion Prime Wireless HDMI Transmitter & Receiver I just couldn’t resist, and I had just the right plan for what id use this for, What’s the worst that could happen!

Nyrius isnt a brand ive heard of but after I got these I went digging and it seems they make a bunch of wireless video stuff, from simple extenders to more advanced kits. I got my hands on their new Orion Prime HDMI-to-HDMI model, so that is what we will be taking a look at!

Unboxing.

From the online pictures it looks pretty straightforward, but once I opened it up I could tell they put some thought into the build, and not just with aesthetics.

Unboxing is as straightforward as it comes. You get the transmitter, receiver, a couple of power adapters, one for each, a short HDMI cable, and of course the instructions. No extra fluff in the boxes is refreshing, I feel like everyone just overcomplicates things and makes opening a hassle and fills up my recycling bin haha. The instructions were easy to follow with clear pictures and very clear and easy to read descriptions, the whole setup was so simple that I had it up and running in less than 10 minutes, no tools needed, no apps to download, just a clean and truly easy to use system.

Setup.

I had used a variety of these wireless adapters in the past and I can say one thing I was worried about was connectivity problems, connecting to an only 2.4 GHz wifi or needing an app, this thing really is plug-and-play. I plugged the transmitter into the back of my computer, connected the receiver to the TV in the other room, powered both up, and there we went, picture and sound came on almost instantly. No pairing buttons to hold down forever, no Wi-Fi network to connect to. It just works.

I tested it from my living room to a room about 20 feet away with a couple walls in the way. The picture was solid. Then I pushed it further, kind of the real reason I wanted this, I then brought my projector outside, on the complete other side of the house, and it still worked, now we can stream out in the yard at night for campfires and such.

Build Quality and Performance.

Both the transmitter and receiver feel real, I know that sounds like a poor way to describe them, but have you ever picked up something and the weight just is suspiciously off, thinking they put in cheaper materials and the exterior feels cheap like an old phone case, well I dont get that feeling with these, you feel like your getting what you paid for before you even plug it in, all supported by a nice matte black finish with vents for passive air cooling on the back and the bottom of the face.

The picture quality is really good for 1080p. For the projector I was nervous how it would transmit through but the colors look natural, no obvious compression artifacts, and audio comes through clean and not delayed.

Now the important part, well at least to some of you, and that would be latency. It’s not zero latency like some higher-end (and way more expensive) systems. There’s a slight delay, maybe around 80-90 milliseconds. For watching TV, sports, or movies it’s basically unnoticeable. For casual gaming it works okay, but if you’re playing competitive first-person shooters you might feel a tiny lag. For my needs it’s totally fine, and I only really noticed it when playing Call of Duty.

Real World Use.

I was tired of running a long HDMI cable under the carpet or along the baseboards every time I wanted to watch the game in the other room or set up the projector outside for backyard movie nights. That old cable was always in the way, getting stepped on or chewed by the dog, and wasn’t long enough to get to where we really wanted the projector.

With the Nyrius Orion Prime I can just leave the transmitter on my PC and move the receiver wherever I need the picture, ive been bouncing between my projector and a cheap non smart tv, I got a second set so I didn’t have to keep unplugging them haha, I guess I kinda like them. I tested it with my Xbox, a tablet for things like presentations or playing games, and of course my computer, I didn’t have a single issue with any of them!

The range is impressive. Even going through a couple walls it held up better than I expected. Only when I went really far and outside did I notice an issue with connection, but it handled going through any room of the house.

Nyrius has a claim of up to 150ft line-of-sight and 50ft through walls, and from my own experience so far those numbers are pretty realistic, obviously depending on your house and how many walls between the transmitter and the receiver, but my double wide trailer stood no match haha one side to the other no issues at all.

If I have to be picky, the units do get a little warm after running for a few hours, but nothing crazy, thanks to the built in vents, they don’t ever feel like they are getting too hot.  Also, there’s no IR passthrough on this model (some Nyrius kits have it), so if you need to control your cable box from the other room you’ll still need a separate IR extender.

Price

You can head on over to Amazon and pick up the Nyrius Orion Prime (TDD20) for around $64.97 right now or you can always head on over to their main webpage and grab it for its listed price of $64.97.

Conclusion

Overall the Nyrius Orion Prime feels well-built, easy to use, and does exactly what it promises. If you’re tired of running long HDMI cables across rooms, under rugs, or outside for special events, then this is a fantastic solution, especially at this price.

I’m really happy I took the chance on it. No more tripping over cables or hiding ugly wire runs. For watching football on the second TV in the living room, projector movie nights in the backyard, it has made some things a lot simpler that’s for sure.

Yeah, it’s not perfect, the slight latency and 1080p, but for everyday use it performs way better than I expected, and I am still very happy with how easy it is to use.
