It Has Been 100 Days Since the 2025 Season Ended — How Do You Feel? (And Other Bears Bullets) ...Middle East

Day 100 of the Chicago Bears offseason. Time flies when you are trying to think along with the offseason team-building and roster-construction processes.

Take a moment to stop and ask how you feel about where this team is and where it is going now that we are 100 days removed from the season-ending loss to the Los Angeles Rams. Do you feel better? Worse? In-between? Undecided? I’m still working through my feelings about this offseason. And while there is no need to rush to jump and make a grand pronouncement, I do like the idea of using the 100-day mile marker as an offseason checkpoint. THINGS I FEEL BETTER ABOUT, PT. I: The addition of speed to the defense via free agency (S Coby Bryant, LB Devin Bush) and the NFL Draft (S Dillon Thieneman, CB Malik Muhammad) was much-needed. After watching burners on the Rams, Packers, Niners, and Lions scoot past a Bears secondary that featured two Pro Bowlers, a Super Bowl champion, and a four-year starter, it was evident that a shakeup was needed. Chicago’s football team is better equipped to handle the speed that opposing offenses bring to the table.

THINGS I DON’T FEEL SO GOOD ABOUT, PT. I: Thinking about the offensive line makes me feel uneasy. This isn’t an unfamiliar feeling as a Bears fan who has been banging the table for the Bears to invest more in their offensive line. But they finally did it last offseason, which paid off in a major way. Unfortunately, Drew Dalman’s surprise retirement and the injury Ozzy Trapilo sustained in the playoff win against the Packers have thrown things for a loop. I like the Logan Jones pick, but there is part of me that wishes he had some positional flexibility along the interior. But I’m not too upset about this front office adding an Iowa lineman to the mix. THINGS I FEEL BETTER ABOUT, PT. II: All in all, I feel better about Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson and his staff now than I did at season’s end. Yes, the team will feel the losses of RBs Coach Eric Bieniemy (who is now the Chiefs OC) and Declan Doyle (who gets play-calling duties after leaving for the Ravens OC gig) in 2026. But with Johnson still atop the chain of command, it isn’t hard to feel good about what the team has in its leader. Mandatory Credit: Kamil Krzaczynski-Imagn Images My confidence in this coaching staff grew a little more over the weekend when I heard Ben Johnson talk about how the coaches need to get better. The football memory bank stored in my brain immediately went to flashbacks of Matt Eberflus bus-tossing players and how that is the polar opposite approach to how his successor handles things. This isn’t to say Johnson doesn’t hold players accountable. He does. And in a public way, too. But he is also willing to point the finger inward and challenge his coaches. When Ben pushes everyone at Halas Hall to be better, it isn’t limited to just the players. That is refreshing in its own way.

THINGS I DON’T FEEL SO GOOD ABOUT, PT. II: The defensive line. Is there potential for that group to be average or above average in 2026? Sure. We’ve seen Gervon Dexter Sr. play better than he did in 2025. Grady Jarrett has a strong résumé and played well enough in spurts down the stretch to make me believe he can be a solid contributor. Montez Sweat is as steady as they come, while Austin Booker flashed enough that the Bears didn’t prioritize adding someone at his position to push him down the depth chart. I just wish this front office could have done more than add useful depth pieces. Don’t get me wrong. I am not overlooking the importance of depth. Every year, we see the value of depth show itself in new ways. But the lack of an impact addition makes me feel like the front office might have missed out on an opportunity.

A thought that has been rattling around my brain since the NFL Draft ended: The 2027 offseason could be one in which Chicago’s defensive line gets a major overhaul. Gervon Dexter Sr., a 2023 draft pick, is set to hit free agency after the year ends. The Bears could part ways with Dayo Odeyingbo and Grady Jarrett in 2027 and create $31.5 million in cap savings while taking on just $8.5 million in dead money. Maybe Chicago’s front office is just biding its time until next offseason to do to the defensive line what it did to the offensive line in 2025. — Tom Pelissero (@TomPelissero) April 29, 2026 Maverick is such a good name for a quarterback. The Tennessee Titans sure seem like a messy bunch:

— Gregg Rosenthal (@greggrosenthal) April 29, 2026 Speaking of messy, Boston Magazine has a poorly timed cover story featuring embattled New England Patriots Head Coach Mike Vrabel listed among the most influential people in Boston. The Chicago Bulls are reportedly down to three candidates to lead their front office into a new era. I don’t have a preference for what the Bulls do, but I have heard good things about Matt Lloyd from trusted basketball minds. Unfortunately, as a Bulls fan, my brain keeps telling me that it won’t matter what they do until the Reinsdorfs are out of the picture. It makes me sad to think about it that way. Happy Lee Elia Day, to those who observe. And Happy “High Infidelity” Day to the rest of you.
