Denver Broncos sign Justin Simmons to one-day contract, veteran safety retires

There aren’t many guys built like former Denver Broncos All-Pro safety Justin Simmons — on the field or off the field. Simmons is signing a one-day contract and will be officially retiring as a member of the Broncos organization after he spent eight years with the team.

Whether it’s his impact with the Justin Simmons Foundation or coming up with game-changing plays in the secondary, picking off passes, Simmons’ Broncos legacy will forever be special. Initially drafted by the team in 2016, Simmons grew into a tremendous player, learning from the No Fly Zone, and ultimately, he became a cornerstone face of the franchise.

He finishes his nine-year NFL career with 666 combined tackles, 479 solo tackles, 4.5 career sacks, five forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries, and 32 career interceptions with 30 of those coming as a member of the Broncos. His accolades range from being a four-time All-Pro safety to a two-time Pro Bowler, and he co-led the league in 2022 in interceptions.

Simmons was the Broncos’ nomination for the Walter Payton Man of the Year award for three straight seasons in 2019, 2020, and 2021 for his involvement in the community and on-field impact. Simmons also won the Demaryius Thomas Team MVP award in 2021 and the Darrent Williams Good Guy Award in 2017, 2019, and 2020.

He helped set a standard inside the locker room that brought younger players in closer, where he mentored and led by example both on and off the field.

Simmons still lives in Denver with his wife Taryn, his daughters Laney and Shae, and son Kyler — and they are all still active within the community with their foundation.
