Could Stealing Dave Lewin Replicate the Celtics’ Success for the Bulls? ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

Things are ramping up here in the Windy City, getting one step closer every day to a new person in charge to steer the ship that’s stuck out at sea. There were six names originally shortlisted for the front office role, three of which made it to the final round of in-person interviews.

But out of the skies came one more candidate who flew under the radar in the first round of virtual interviews, but has joined the three names in the final round. Boston Celtics Assistant GM, Dave Lewin, officially has his hat in the ring to run this circus.

Knowing that the Chicago Bulls are trying to make a decision on who the front office president will be before the NBA Draft Combine — which is less than two weeks away — let’s quickly get to know who Dave Lewin is, his hits and misses, and why I believe he could change the Chicago Bulls.

New Name Enters the Chicago Bulls’ Front Office Mix, Hiring Timeline Coming Into Focus (Report)

Dave Lewin: The Hits and Misses

Dave Lewin, 39, started building his portfolio two decades ago.

He began his career as a Data Analysis Intern for the Global Initiative at Harvard Business School in 2006, then worked as a Contributing Writer for Football Outsiders from 2006 to 2008.

In 2007, he took his first step into the world of basketball, joining the Cleveland Cavaliers as a Basketball Operations Analytics Intern until 2009, before transitioning into the role of Basketball Operations Assistant/Salary Cap Analyst for the Cavaliers from 2010–2012.

Then in 2012, he made the move to Boston, starting as a Scouting Coordinator and later serving as the Director of Scouting from 2013–2019. He got his first taste of being the man in charge when he took on the role of General Manager of Basketball Operations for the Maine Red Claws from 2014 to 2017.

Dave then took on the role of Director of Player Personnel from 2019 to 2022, and in 2023 got promoted once again to Assistant GM at the Boston Celtics, where he currently sits.

Hits

In Dave Lewin’s 13-year tenure with the Boston Celtics, they’ve missed the NBA playoffs just once. Obviously, not being the man in charge, all the credit does not go to him, but even in his role he has accumulated some big wins.

As a member of the scouting department, he was instrumental in players like Jaylen Brown, Jayson Tatum, and Robert Williams being drafted by the Celtics, players who all played key roles in deep playoff runs.

The year he was promoted to second in command was also the year the Boston Celtics were able to get over the hump and win the franchise’s 18th championship.

I dont know Dave Lewin but The Celtics are one of the top ran teams in the league. So I’m intrigued with anyone there t.co/353vITjIjS

His strength and ability to maneuver the cap was on full display when Boston traded away Kristaps Porziņģis and Jrue Holiday and still kept their championship window open. By the trade deadline, he helped the team come up with a $0 luxury tax bill.

Even in his experience as a general manager in the former D-League (now G League) with the Maine franchise, his tenure was successful. In the team’s entire history, they made the playoffs just four times, three of which came under Dave Lewin’s four-season run.

Misses

Just like with the hits, the misses are also shared blame.

As much as Dave Lewin played a role in some great draft picks, he was also involved in the decisions to draft guys like James Young, Guerschon Yabusele, and Romeo Langford—first-round picks that did not work out for Boston.

Even his run in the G League, while impressive, never got close enough to sniff the Finals.

And one could also argue that, as good as the Boston Celtics have been, only one championship and two Finals appearances to show for it is somewhat underwhelming.

Combine that with the fact that Dave Lewin has never truly led a team as the man in charge of a front office, and you start to see some holes in this “perfect” candidate.

What Could the Chicago Bulls Expect from Dave Lewin?

Here is where I feel that, despite the inexperience, his strengths outweigh the other candidates.

While all the remaining names have their strengths in player development, Dave Lewin has that, and then some.

His main quality of being a cap expert is such an understatement. Lewin is highly respected in NBA circles just because of that innate ability to help formulate teams that fit around the league’s complex cap rules.

The Reinsdorfs have a reputation for being frugal spenders, so who better than someone who knows the best way to use the cap flexibility on the table?

You never really know until they step in and do the job, but the Bulls are putting together a great list of candidates.Lewin is a very smart guy. Was an early adopter of analytics, has put in his time working up the C's org, well-rounded skill set. t.co/qFCVG95roF

Lewin was never a guy who settled for front office work when his hoop dreams failed, but rather someone who wanted to do this from the jump.

“That was the perspective I operated from,” Lewin said in a 2025 interview. “From a young age, I was aware that there were people whose job it was to find the right players and put together the roster… You prepare for the big decisions over months and years, but all anyone will care about is whether you get those couple of big decisions a year right.”

His ability to make decisions not just based on the eye test but also with new-age numbers to back it up is why Chicago are considering taking a flyer on Dave Lewin.

That is the entire Boston Celtics ideology, predicting and playing into new-age trends, something Michael Reinsdorf did mention as something he is looking for in the new hire.

However, the lack of any front office leadership experience makes his case a bit weaker, for the people hiring, than the other guys still in contention.
