"I love that the song was part of such an amazing time for the Sabres and for Buffalo," the frontman told The Athletic back in June 2020. The Goo Goo Dolls were formed in Buffalo in 1985, originally as a cover band, where Rzeznik was born and raised.

After 10 years of releasing albums, The Goo Goo Dolls eventually evolved into a punk band and gained mainstream attention thanks to the release of their breakthrough single "Name." In 1998, they released "Iris" for the soundtrack of the film City of Angels and the lead single for their sixth album, Dizzy Up the Girl. The song spent 11 months on the Billboard Hot 100 and peaked at No. 1 on the publication's Hot 100 Airplay chart (now called the Radio Songs Chart) for 18 weeks. Currently, "Iris" has over 3.3 billion streams on Spotify. Despite its success, it never topped the Hot 100 chart.
