A crew member has died away while assembling the stage for an upcoming Shakira concert set to take place in Brazil’s Rio de Janeiro on May 2. The tragedy occurred on Sunday (April 26).
The news was confirmed by the event organizers of the Todo Mundo no Rio festival, who stated in an official statement that “an accident this Sunday afternoon tragically claimed the life of a professional working on the assembly of the show’s structures.”
The fire department immediately responded to the scene and transported the patient to the hospital, where they died. “At this time, we are extending our full support, care, and solidarity to the responsible company, its team, and the victim’s family,” reads the statement.
According to Reuters, “the victim suffered severe crushing injuries to his lower limbs after becoming trapped in a lifting system.”
The “Hips Don’t Lie” singer has not yet released a statement about the crew member’s death. Billboard has reached out to her team for comment.
