ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Gas prices in Rochester and across the country continue to rise as the war with Iran enters its eighth week.
Rochester’s average price for gas hit $4.19 per gallon on Monday, according to AAA’s latest report. That’s an increase of two cents compared to a week ago and 26 cents compared to a month ago.
Rochester’s average remains higher than the national and state averages. The national average, currently $4.11 per gallon, rose by seven cents compared to last week. For the state average, now $4.18 per gallon, it rose by eight cents compared to a week ago.
The cheapest gas in the Rochester area on Monday is $3.89 per gallon at the Valero on South Clinton Avenue, according to GasBuddy. You can find the lowest price in your area through GasBuddy’s website.
Overall, Rochester has seen the sharpest spike in gas prices since March of 2022, during the pandemic era. News10NBC has spoken with people who are choosing to drive less and to stay home for vacations because of the high gas prices. It’s also been hard on drivers who use their own cars for work.
Latest on the Strait of Hormuz
The U.S. Navy’s blockade of the Strait of Hormuz continues as peace negotiations remain on hold. U.S. envoys were supposed to travel to Pakistan over the weekend for peace talks with Iran. However, President Donald Trump canceled the trip after Iran insisted the U.S. should end its blockade of Iranian ports before new talks could take place.
The blockade involves all ships entering or departing Iranian ports and coastal areas. President Donald Trump hopes that, by controlling the Strait of Hormuz, the U.S. will stop oil tankers from entering Iranian ports, cutting off a major source of revenue for the Iranian government.
As News10NBC has covered, Iran’s military has taken control of the strait as leverage during the war, since 20% of the world’s oil passes through the waterway. That’s sent oil prices soaring worldwide. You can see where the rest of the world’s oil supply travels in this story.
How to find the cheapest gas price
In addition to checking GasBuddy’s fuel finder, News10NBC’s Deanna Dewberry has some tips to improve fuel efficiency or find the lowest price:
Keep your gas tank at least half full. This way, you have time to choose the cheapest gas station instead of what’s closest. Drive smoothly, as hard braking and acceleration can reduce fuel economy. Buy top-tier gas for better engine performance and fuel efficiency. Regularly check tire pressure, as low pressure can affect fuel efficiency. Use gas apps to find the cheapest gas nearby.RELATED:
