How to win Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? – by someone who has ...Middle East

News by : (inews) -

Read the “A-Z of general knowledge” and listen to Jeremy Clarkson.

That’s the advice of the latest jackpot winner on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? – who has shared his extensive guide to joining the elite club of £1m victors.

Roman Dubowski, a retired IT analyst from Stockport, became the seventh person in the ITV show’s 38-year history to win £1m by answering all 15 questions correctly on Sunday’s show.

Audience members gasped when Dobowski gambled £468,000 of winnings by playing the £1m question – and confidently identified the trademark Bass Ale beer logo featured in a painting by French impressionist Manet.

The millionaire, who will use his windfall to to buy a “new house with a drive so I don’t have to park on the road any more”, is a quiz hobbyist in his early 60s, who was previously turned down twice by TV’s biggest-earning game show.

But the winner – who stumbled early in his run and needed the audience’s help when he couldn’t name egg yolk as an ingredient in mayonnaise – still hasn’t scratched the quizzing bug.

“It’s the final of our pub quiz league on Thursday but I won’t be playing for money then,” Dubowski told The i Paper. “I’ve been on Radio 4’s Brain of Britain but I didn’t get past the semi-final. That was disappointing. I’ll let this sink in for a bit but I might go back and have another go.”

Host Clarkson said he feared Dubowski would be a dud after burning through two lifelines early on. As the run headed towards the jackpot, the astonished presenter exclaimed: “It looks like we’ve got a proper encyclopaedia in a shirt.”

After the final question was dispatched, a delighted Clarkson uttered: “You’ve just won one million pounds,” amid cascading tinsel, and shook the winner’s hand, adding “no huggies” – the host has said he is uncomfortable about “intimate” bodily contact with contestants.

Dubowski, who has grown a beard since the TV recording last December in a bid to maintain his anonymity, has now offered his advice to fellow quizzers seeking to follow his path…

Visit art galleries

“When the £1m question came up I thought, ‘I think I know this.’ I like going to art galleries. I’d been to the Courtauld in London and seen this famous Manet painting (A Bar at the Folies-Bergère, 1882). I could picture the barmaid and the red triangle of Bass beer in the image.

“That was the key. I also remembered that Bass has one of the oldest registered trademarks, which reinforced it for me. I used my 50/50, but in truth I was already confident.”

Read this book – and Wikipedia

“I have on my bookshelf the A to Z of Everything: A Compendium of General Knowledge by Trevor Montague. It’s very good. I also revised Jeremy Clarkson’s Wikipedia entry to see what topics I should and shouldn’t ask him. In the end, I did it without using Jeremy as a lifeline.”

Choose your friends wisely

“Choose a Phone a Friend lifeline who knows things you don’t know. Some people choose family members but they have to know your weak points. I chose my sister because I know exactly what she’s good at. I needed her help at £2,000 to answer a retail fashion question, which was not a strong point for me.”

Listen to Jeremy Clarkson

“He gave me some advice before we started. He said he’s seen people misuse the 50/50 lifeline. Only use it if you have an inkling that one answer is right, don’t use it when you have no idea at all or you’ll be left with two you don’t know. I did use 50/50 on the million-pound question but only because I thought, why not? I knew the answer.”

Be persistent

“I tried three times to get on the show. The first was back in the Chris Tarrant era, and I didn’t hear anything back at all. I applied again around 2022 and got much further but just before filming, I received a letter saying I hadn’t been selected in the end. I didn’t apply again until recently, when I saw the show was casting and thought I’d give it one more go. I was gobsmacked just to be chosen.”

Stay calm

“At £1,000 I thought I was going to leave with nothing. I was more nervous at the start. Then I just went one question at a time. One of my strategies was to stay calm and not rush, to speak slowly and think things through rather than jump at an answer. But I knew all of the final five questions.”

Don’t spend £1m you don’t have

“I’m not one for extravagant purchases. I prefer experiences like travel. I hope to go to South America or back to New Zealand. The win didn’t sink in until later. It felt unreal. You don’t get the money until after the show is broadcast. It’s coming soon.”
