In a speech at the consultative meeting between Arab and European leaders in Cyprus on Friday, Sisi reiterated Egypt’s firm stance, foremost being that political talks remain the only acceptable way out of the current situation and to achieve sustainable stability.
He called for full adherence to freedom of navigation and the importance of securing international waterways, considering it a firmly established and stable principle of international law.
Sisi added that recent developments have proven beyond any doubt that resolving conflicts peacefully is a necessity, not an option.
He also called to establish a zone free of weapons of mass destruction throughout the Middle East, alongside implementing a nuclear non-proliferation regime in the region comprehensively and without selectivity.
Dark shadow
The war on Iran has cast a dark shadow over the entire international situation, Sisi warned, bringing with it serious repercussions for regional stability, maritime navigation, and the global economy – particularly energy and food security and prices, as well as disruptions to supply chains.
The Egyptian president further warned of the potential threat of nuclear contamination, which he warned would be a catastrophe unto itself.
Sisi noted how his country has eagerly made strenuous efforts to contain the conflict and prevent its escalation – especially in light of Iran’s attacks on Gulf Arab states, Jordan, and Iraq, which he slammed as “reprehensible and unacceptable under any circumstances”.
