The Cubs acquired INF Nicky Lopez from the Colorado Rockies in exchange for cash considerations, per the team.

During his time as a bench piece in Chicago (last April and May), Lopez posted a .282 OPS and -11 wRC+, though that was across just 18 at-bats. So far this year with the Rockies in Triple-A, Lopez has a .906 OPS with 11 runs in 54 at-bats.
He is not on the Rockies’ 40-man roster, meaning the Cubs do not need a corresponding move right away. However, this does feel like the beginning of the end for Scott Kingery. Lopez is the perfect replacement as a utility infielder who can come off the bench when needed or be used as a pinch runner.
As for Kingery, yeah, it hasn’t really worked out much so far. Craig Counsell has been extremely reluctant to use him at the plate, not that Nicky Lopez is much of an upgrade there, and he wasn’t exactly nails in the infield, either. Lopez, by contrast, rates out much more highly on defense. To be sure, no one has indicated outright that they’re swapping one for the other, but it does feel at least moderately plausible. I suppose we’ll find out soon enough!
