This Could Be Fun: Mike Tomlin is Joining Sunday Night Football ...Middle East

Mike Tomlin’s time away from football will be short-lived.

It has been a busy news week in football circles, with the NFL Draft set to open its doors on Thursday. Mock drafts have been flying here, there, and everywhere. Prospect fits have been offered up as fits for all 32 teams. And because of that, news of Mike Tomlin joining the NBC team for NFL coverage slipped under my radar.

In case you miseed it, too, here is the news:

NEWS: Mike Tomlin is headed to NBC to be a top studio analyst on its Sunday night pregame show, “Football Night in America,” sources told The Athletic. pic.twitter.com/KuvrBEYnvT

— The Athletic (@TheAthletic) April 21, 2026

The Athletic was first to report on Mike Tomlin taking his talents to the NBC broadcast booth. ESPN has since confirmed the report. News of Tomlin’s departure to the broadcast booth comes months after he stepped away from his long-time gig as the Pittsburgh Steelers’ head coach. Tomlin, 53, has a résumé that includes 13 playoff trips, 12 seasons with at least 10 wins, and a Super Bowl won at age-36.

An all-time great football coach, Tomlin is taking his talents to the broadcast booth after a successful coaching career — just like his predecessor, Bill Cowher. Sometimes, I’m convinced time is just a flat circle.

Mike Tomlin to join NBC’s Sunday Night Football coverage

All in all, NBC does a great job of covering professional sports in the United States. The new-look NBA on NBC has been solid in its first year back in the swing of things. Sunday Night Baseball on Peacock and NBC has been great, too. But the golden goose here is its NFL coverage, which will look different in 2026. And I’m OK with that because Mike Tomlin taking over the lead studio analyst role is something I will tune in to watch this year.

Tomlin’s press conferences have been fun to watch from afar because he gives insight that I would describe as honest and forthcoming. If Tomlin brings that kind of energy to Sunday Night Football, it would be a welcome breath of fresh air. With that in mind, I’m curious to see what other changes could happen. Now that Tony Dungy out of the picture, we could see a real shakeup at NBC. And with the Bears positioned to be in a bunch of prime time games, it won’t be long until we see Tomlin — who the Bears were interested in hiring as their head coach in 2025 — opining on Chicago’s football team.
