A 16-year-old student at Rock Island High School in western Illinois was arrested Monday after he brought a loaded firearm to school, police said.
About 10 a.m. Monday, Rock Island officers were dispatched to the high school, at 1400 25th Ave., for reports of a student with a gun. As police responded, they learned through gun was discovered by staff after being detected by the school’s metal detector.
According to reports, school security searched the student’s backpack and contacted Rock Island police.
The student was taken into custody and charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and possession of a stolen firearm. He was transported to a juvenile detention facility pending further court proceedings, police said.
The incident remains under investigation by the Rock Island POlice Department’s Criminal Investigation Division, police said.
Rock Island High School is located along the Mississippi River in far western Illinois, near the border of Iowa and about four miles away from Davenport.
