A New Jersey man admitted to killing a 9-year-old girl while she was playing outside in an apartment courtyard with her brother and friends after he opened fire on a “family nemesis” in 2022.
The victim’s family and shooter Isiah M. Roberts’ lawyer said that the shooting was related to a “stupid” Facebook beef.
Roberts, who was 19 years old at the time of the incident, pleaded guilty to aggravated manslaughter for the death of fourth grade student Sequoya Bacon-Jones.
Roberts’ attorney, John W. Hartmann, reportedly details the events that led to the shooting during a court hearing on April 16. Hartmann said that the altercation stemmed from a Facebook feud that started on the same day as the shooting, according to NJ.com.

Hartmann said that Roberts, now 23, was contacted by his mother and sister over the online argument. He was told to “get down to Kingsbury,” where the shooting took place, after a fight broke out over the Facebook feud that involved his sister. Upon his arrival, Roberts was given the name of a “family nemesis” that police believe was his intended victim.
Roberts got a 9 mm pistol from an apartment and found the “family nemesis” outside, whom he believed also had a handgun. Hartmann said that Roberts opened fire, striking Bacon-Jones as she tried to run away with her brother. Their mother and other residents attempted to give her aid before police arrived at the scene.
Hartmann insisted that Roberts did not intend to harm Bacon-Jones. However, he said that his client did show reckless disregard for human life that warranted the manslaughter charge.
“He shot off two rounds first, everybody scattered, and then he shot off another four rounds and my daughter got hit,” the victim’s mother, Sacha Bacon-Jones, said in a 2022 interview with KYW. “I run up and my baby is laying on the ground covered in blood.”
Sacha added that her daughter was her “little girl” before she further recalled the incident. “She’s not crying at all, she’s just like moaning and she’s reaching for me and I’m like I can’t believe what I’m looking at,” she said. “It’s not really happening, but it’s really happening.”

The mother also described the beef that sparked the shooting, explaining that it was “stupid Facebook stuff.”
“Now all I have are memories I can’t make anymore,” Sacha said during a press conference after her daughter’s death, per Law & Crime.
Roberts will now spend between 15 and 18 years in prison as part of his plea deal, according to NJ.com. His sentencing hearing is scheduled to take place in June.
