Chicago Cubs Lineup: Eventually, They Should Move Moises Ballesteros Up, Right? ...Middle East

CUBS LINEUP — For the first time this season, the Chicago Cubs are one game OVER .500. And even though that’s arbitrary and meaningless, it still feels nice. With that said, today’s matchup against the Mets represents their toughest of the weekend, with Jameson Taillon (and the wind blowing out to right …) set to take on Freddy Peralta.

Here’s a look at the Cubs lineup against a pitcher they’ve seen plenty.

Chicago Cubs Lineup:

Nico Hoerner, 2B Michael Busch, 1B Alex Bregman, 3B Ian Happ, LF Seiya Suzuki, RF Moises Ballesteros, DH Miguel Amaya, C Pete Crow-Armstrong, CF Dansby Swanson, SS

Given that Craig Counsell is still swapping out Moises Ballesteros for Matt Shaw when the opposing team brings in a lefty, I’m not sure we’re going to get Ballesteros higher up in the Cubs lineup just yet … but it can’t be too far away, right?

Our 22-year-old slugger is cranking the ball, and getting comical results because of it: .375/.409/.625 (185 wRC+). And he’s doing all of that with just a 20.5% strikeout rate … again, at age 22. It is genuinely difficult to overstate how good he looks at the plate right now, and what a development that can be, not just for this Cubs team, but for the next … oh, I don’t know, five Cubs teams after this one?

And if he keeps hitting like this, while Michael Busch and Ian Happ continue on their respective paths (let’s be fair, Happ is doing WAY better than Busch), then you wouldn’t have to do much to convince me to move Ballesteros into the top-half of the order.

That may be coming eventually, but I guess not yet. Today, he bats sixth.

Beyond him, Miguel Amaya is the man behind the plate, and our glorious Nico Hoerner leads things off. Go Cubs.

New York Mets Lineup:

Carson Benge, LF Bo Bichette, 3B Francisco Lindor, SS Luis Robert Jr., CF Francisco Alvarez, C Mark Vientos, 1B Brett Baty, RF Marcus Semien, 2B

Pitching Matchup:

Chicago Cubs: Jameson Taillon, RHP

By the numbers, Taillon’s last start was a brutal one: 6.0 IP, 6H, 6ER (3HR), 2BB, 10K. The strikeouts are nice and interesting, but three homers is three homers. Ditto six earned runs. But don’t forget the context of that outing, because the Cubs actually won that game in no small part BECAUSE of Taillon.

In case you forgot, this was the Carson Kelly walk-off game against the Pirates last Sunday that featured some of the HIGHEST winds at Wrigley Field you’ll ever see (blowing out to center at 18 MPH with gusts up to 34 MPH that day). And Taillon, to his credit, gave up 5 earned runs in the first two innings, but then threw four more innings with just one earned run allowed, preserving the bullpen and keeping the Cubs in the game long enough to come back.

Moreover, Taillon’s velocity seems to be coming back slowly, but surely, with a half mile gained between his first and second and also his second and third starts of the year.

And although the wind is blowing out again today, this time to right, the Mets offense has been brutal against right-handed pitching so far this season: .235/.297/.332 (81 wRC+). In fact, it’s been dead last in MLB since April 4 (66 wRC+ vs RHP), the first game they played without Juan Soto (who is on the IL).

New York Mets: Freddy Peralta, RHP

The Cubs have faced Freddy Peralta a lot over the years, occasionally with some success, but not always. Here’s how his regular season (and playoff) starts went against a mostly similar Cubs lineup last year:

5/4 vsCHC: 6.0 IP, 4H, 0ER, 1BB, 7K 6/19 @CHC: 5.0 IP, 2H, 3ER, 2BB, 6K – 2 HRs 7/30 vsCHC: 4.0 IP, 5H, 5ER, 4BB, 3K – 1 HR 8/18 @CHC: 6.0 IP, 1H, 0ER, 3BB, 6K NLDS G1: 5.2 IP, 4H, 2ER, 3BB, 9K – 2 HRs NLDS G4: 4.0 IP, 3H, 3ER, 2BB, 6K – HR

So, yeah, there are a few gems in there, but they’ve definitely cracked through on occasion. As for individual matchups, some are good, some are bad. Ian Happ (2-32, 14Ks in the regular season) is a particularly rough one, but he did do this in the NLDS, in case you forgot:
