Racing in his first competition since last year’s edition of this meet, Milak tried both the men’s 50m fly and 200m free on for size this morning, after having reaped gold last night in the 100m free (48.36).
Milak produced the fastest time of the morning in the 50m fly, logging 23.59 to lead the heats.
The next-closest competitor was Zoltan Bagi, who notched 23.95 as the only other sub-24-second performer.
17-year-old David Antal, last night’s 200m fly victor after Milak dropped the final, earned the 3rd seed in 24.31 while Szebasztian Szabo lurks as the 4th-seeded athlete in 24.49.
30-year-old Szabo is the reigning national record holder in this event, owning a lifetime best of 22.90 from the 2019 World Championships.
Milak ranks as the nation’s 3rd-best performer of all time, possessing a PB of 23.27 from three years ago.
Next on Milak’s list this morning was the men’s 200m free, where he led the pack once again.
The versatile ace established a field-leading outing of 1:50.18 to hold a narrow advantage over Nandor Nemeth, who will try to upgrade his 100m free silver to gold, hitting 1:50.37.
Milak has been as swift as 1:45.74 in his career, a time he posted for 5th place at the 2021 European Championships.
As a refresher, new this year is the fact that these championships include semi-finals of all events at the 50-100-200 distance. That means swimmers need to race these events three times in order to vie for medals.
