British backstroke has been looking in rude health over the last 12 months. Oliver Morgan demolished the national record in the 100 back in a time of 52.12 at the 2025 Aquatics GB championships, leading five men under 54 seconds, and Jack Skerry took European U23 gold last summer in 53.45.

The first backstroke record to go down at these championships however was broken by Eastbourne 15-year-old Patrick Przyczyna. He first lowered the 15-year-olds 100 back record this morning, clocking 55.86 to set a new best time and come within half a second of the 55.50 required to qualify for the European Junior Championships team.

This evening saw him enter new territory, hacking nearly a second off his prelims swim to touch in 54.92, winning the junior final by more than a second. He split 26.79/28.13, closing far faster than the 28.74 from his morning swim.

In his interview after the race Przyczyna noted that he often struggles with swimming too close to the lane rope, something which was evident in his swim this morning. The London Aquatics Centre is a difficult pool for backstrokers anyway, with a curved roof offering precious little direction for swimmers looking up. He worked on staying central in his warm-up this evening, and swam almost dead centre in the final.

Przyczyna now ranks as the fastest British 15-year-old by a whopping 1.48 seconds. Three of the top five in those rankings swam in the junior final tonight – Przyczyna, Toby Nakamura-Drew, and Austyn Manley, while Drew Fearn placed 7th in the open final in 55.37 after a 54.85 in prelims.

British 15-Year-Old Boys 100 Back, All-Time Top Five

Patrick Przyczyna – 54.92 (2026) Dean Fearn – 56.40 (2024) Toby Nakamura-Drew – 56.57 (2025) Grant Halsall – 56.75 (2009) Austyn Manley – 56.76 (2026)

Additionally, he now ranks 33rd all-time among British men, and was one of nine swimmers to break 55 seconds at the championships today. His swim tonight is faster than the 16-year-olds record of 54.95, and within a second of the 18-year-old record of 54.10 held by Matt Ward.

Przyczyna’s time would rank 6th in the U.S. 15-16 NAG rankings, just 0.30 seconds off #3 Michael Taylor with over a year left in that hypothetical age group. Daniel Diehl owns that NAG in 53.27, but after dropping 3.21 seconds in the past 12 months that time does not seem too out of reach for the British junior.

Przyczyna swam at the European Youth Olympic Festival for Great Britain last summer, placing 2nd in the 100 back in 57.62, although he was faster in both the heats and the semi-finals. He locked up his qualification for the European Junior Championships tonight, and will have the opportunity to add more swims.

He will swim the 50 back and 200 back later in the week, as well as the 50 fly and 100 fly. He already owns the age group record in the 50 back thanks to the 26.40 he swam in Geneva this January, while in the 200 his PB of 2:04.93 is nearly three seconds behind Luke Greenbank‘s record of 2:02.05. Austyn Manley may be the man to watch in that event, having clocked 2:03.44 at the age of 14 at this meet last year.
