Will Ellard set a new S14 world record in the 100 free on the third day of competition at the Aquatics GB Championships, the first world record set so far at the meet. He ended up hacking half a second off the former world record set at 50.90 by Brazilian Arthur Xavier Ribeiro.

Ellard’s PB rested at the 50.58 he swam for gold at the World Para Swimming Championships last year, but as this was not ratified Ribeiro’s world record still stood. Ellard made certain of setting the standard tonight with a commanding swim, going out in a blazing-fast 23.75 at the 50 before closing in 26.66.

Ellard scratched out of the 100 back to prioritise this event after swimming 59.23 for the second-fastest para time in the field this morning. He was 52.09 in the heats of the 100 free, blasting out again in 23.96 before cruising home in 28.13.

Ellard won a pair of gold medals at the 2024 Paris Paralympics, one individually in the 200 free in a time of 1:51.30 and one as part of the mixed 4×100 free relay. That 200 free time marked a new world record for the S14 category, a time that he dipped under 12 months later at the World Para Swimming Championships in a time of 1:51.08.

The long course 100 free and 200 free are the only two world records he owns, but he has an additional four British records in short course in the 100 free, 200 free, 100 fly, and 200 IM.

For his services to swimming, Ellard was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire in the 2025 New Year’s Honours.

Bruce Dee broke the longstanding British Record in the S6 100 free not once but twice today. Having clocked 1:09.69 to shave 0.14 seconds off Sascha Kindred‘s 2014 record of 1:09.83, he was nearly half a second quicker in the final tonight to take silver in 1:09.26.

That was the 20-year-old’s second medal of the championships, after taking the men’s MC 100 breast title on Tuesday. He clocked 1:21.25 to fall just outside his 1:20.97 British record from the World Para Swimming Championships last September.

Mark Tompsett was also just outside his S14 British record in the 100 back tonight, taking the win in 58.32 but just missing the European Para Swimming Championships standard. His British record of 58.13 was set last February, and is over a second faster than the 59.19 he swam for bronze in Paris the year before.

Georgia Sheffield got the best of a thrilling battle in the women’s S14 200 free tonight, out-touching Olivia Newman-Baronius in a time of 2:07.65, just a tenth off her lifetime best. There were four women separated by just 0.30 seconds with 50 to go, but Richardson and Newman-Baronius pulled away from 100 backstroke champions Bethany Firth and early leader Poppy Maskill.
