ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Rochester police are investigating an explosion that destroyed a duplex on Lake Avenue. Investigators confirmed someone lives in the downstairs apartment but believe the house was empty at the time of the explosion.

Nearly every person in the area brought up a fear for the person who lived there and whether that person is okay.
“It was a big boom across the street, and the whole roof just — it just collapsed,” said Cary Smith.
Investigators are calling this a total loss. The damage was extensive, with the roof completely collapsed and the structure reduced to rubble.
People stopped by to take a look at it throughout the afternoon. Patsy Addison lives across the street.
“I’m just grateful that the guy that lived there, I’m glad he wasn’t home you know. That would’ve been very tragic,” Addison said.
Joe Benson said he has lived in the area for years.
“It’s unfortunate that this is happening. The area’s really changed over the years,” Benson said. “Sad. It’s really sad. This was a great neighborhood for years and lately it’s just really changed.”
Outside of wondering if the tenant was okay, the cause of the explosion remained the biggest concern and question for people. Investigators say they’re still working on answering that question.
As of right now, they say it’s way too early to tell if the explosion was accidental, criminal or the result of reckless actions. Police say the Arson Task Force is looking into it.
The Arson Task Force includes investigators from the fire department, Rochester Police Department’s Major Crimes Unit and agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
