The Cubs’ minor league squads began their new series in a fairly successful manner, with three of the four clubs picking up wins in their openers. Kevin Alcántara was the star of the day as he put on a show in Iowa’s opener against Columbus. While Knoxville’s bats fell flat, both South Bend and Myrtle Beach got great pitching efforts in their wins. Let’s get to it.
Cubs Prospects Report | April 15, 2026
Triple-A Iowa Cubs
Tuesday was the Kevin Alcántara show for the Iowa Cubs as they pounded the Columbus Clippers with an 8-1 win. While Columbus took the initial lead in the bottom of the first, Iowa jumped ahead in the second on a Christian Bethancourt RBI single, followed by a wild pitch that scored James Triantos.
In the third, Kevin Alcántara hit the first of his two home runs on the day – a solo shot, making it 3-1. Then, in the 5th, after a Pedro Ramirez RBI single made it 5-1, Alcántara put the game on ice with his second dinger of the ballgame, belting a three-run blast giving the Cubs an 8-1 lead, which is how the game ended.
On the mound, Connor Noland was solid, tossing five innings of one-run ball on five hits, no walks, and six strikeouts. The bullpen kept Columbus off the board in four innings of work, as well.

Double-A Knoxville Smokies
Knoxville struggled quite a bit at the plate in their 5-1 series-opening loss to Pensacola. The Smokies fell behind 3-0 from the get-go in the bottom of the first. Trailing 4-0 in the top of the third inning, they picked up their lone run of the ballgame on a Jordan Nwogu RBI single. But that was about all the offense would muster. The Blue Wahoos held them to just four hits for the game, with Nwogu recording two of them.
Tyler Schlaffer got the start on the mound and was roughed up a bit. He was tagged with all four runs in the first two innings, and he was pulled after the second. On the plus side, the bullpen held Pensacola to just one run the rest of the way, but the damage had been done.

High-A South Bend Cubs
South Bend surged to a 5-1 win in their opener with Beloit thanks to a well-rounded performance at the plate and on the mound.
At the plate, Owen Ayers had the biggest day with a home run, a double, and a pair of RBI while Matt Halbach and Reginald Preciado also drove in a run apiece. While Kane Kepley didn’t record a hit, he did draw a pair of walks – one of which led to a run scored.
On the mound, Brooks Caple was outstanding through his 5.2 innings of work. Caple racked up nine strikeouts, allowed just one run on two hits, and didn’t issue a single walk. In relief, Grayson Moore and Alfredo Romero kept the Sky Carp off the board as well.

Much like South Bend, Myrtle Beach used some clutch hitting and dominant pitching to come away with a win in their opening game against Kannapolis. Cole Mathis had the big knock of the matchup on Tuesday. In the third inning with the score still 0-0, Mathis belted a three-run homer to give the Pelicans a 3-0 lead. From there, it was smooth sailing on the mound for Myrtle Beach.
Hayden Frank, Mason McGwire, and Jordan Henriquez each tossed multiple innings and combined for the shutout. The trio allowed just five hits and only one walk on the day while combining for 11 strikeouts in the win.
