The Detroit Tigers and rookie shortstop Kevin McGonigle agreed to an eight-year contract extension worth $150 million, the team announced Wednesday.
The deal, which begins next year, covers the 2027-34 seasons and could be worth up to $160 million including escalators.
McGonigle, 21, ESPN’s No. 2 prospect for the 2026 season, became the youngest Tigers player named to an Opening Day roster since Omar Infante in 2003. He quickly proved the team made the right call, becoming the third-youngest player with four or more hits on Opening Day in the past 100 major league seasons.
A first-round pick in the 2023 draft, McGonigle had a hot spring that allowed him to skip Triple-A after playing in just 46 games in Double-A last season.
He is batting .311 with one home run and eight RBIs for the Tigers, who are 8-9 entering Wednesday’s game against the Kansas City Royals.
