Day 86 of the Chicago Bears offseason. Happy Tax Day!
Keep an eye on the Detroit Lions as a trade-up candidate in the 2026 NFL Draft. Lions General Manager Brad Holmes sounds like he will be open for business when the event opens eight days from today. “Absolutely,” Holmes said (h/t Pro Football Talk) when discussing the possibility of trading up during next week’s NFL Draft. “Yeah, if it’s the right guy. You guys know me. I feel like you guys get mad at me sometimes, I do it too much sometimes. But, no, if we have that kind of conviction for a player, absolutely. We’re going to go and get him.”THE BN BEARS PODCAST: Apple | Spotify | YouTube
A quick look at the Lions’ roster reveals that they have similar needs to the Bears. Like Chicago, Detroit could use some help along the defensive line. Both teams could also target offensive line help because of questions and concerns at the left tackle position. I’m always keeping tabs on what the Bears’ NFC North rivals are doing on NFL Draft weekend. But given the team needs, I’ll keep a closer eye on things this year than I normally do. Mandatory Credit: David Banks-Imagn Images I enjoyed reading this Aaron Leming piece at Windy City Gridiron that dives into five players who could be the best first-round fits for the Bears. Chicago’s football team is in a strange place going into this NFL Draft. They have a bunch of notable needs. But with four picks within the first 89 selections, they can address them in a variety of different ways — which makes it difficult to lock in on what they will do. However, the unpredictable vibe that this team is giving off is probably a good thing because it will keep everyone on their toes. In case you missed it: The Bears announced new jersey numbers for players, both new and old. New safety Coby Bryant declared (via Twitter/X) that he is creating a new legacy by choosing No. 2. There was a belief that the Super Bowl-winning safety would try to cut a deal with kicker Cairo Santos, who wears No. 8 — the number worn by Bryant while with the Seattle Seahawks. Some thought he might go with No. 24, which would be something of an homage to the Kobe Bryant who was more well-known in basketball circles. Ultimately, I’m digging that Bryant will carve his own path with a new number that has significance to him. Bears Chairman George McCaskey shared a statement reflecting on the death of former Bears assistant coach Dave McGinnis:Statement from George H. The Athletic’s Dianna Russini resigned from her post as the publication’s top NFL insider. This announcement comes one week after pictures of Russini and New England Patriots Head Coach Mike Vrabel together at an Arizona resort emerged and raised a slew of questions about moral and ethical standards. It has been quite the side plot to follow. You can read Russini’s resignation letter below:I submitted my letter of resignation to The Athletic. Everything I have to say about it is below. pic.twitter.com/401nrtbEsj
— Dianna Russini (@DMRussini) April 14, 2026 For now, Vrabel emerges from this unscathed. However, I wonder how much longer that will be the case. I wonder if the Pats head coach gets a slap on the wrist from the NFL at some point, with the league referring to the situaiton as participating in “conduct detrimental to the league.” Will the Philadelphia Eagles raise concerns about Russini’s reporting in connection to wide receiver A.J. Brown and rumors linking him as a potential Patriots target. Is there a potential tampering charge to be made? In the end, I don’t think this is the last we’ve heard of this story (for better or worse). This piece by Awful Announcing’s Sam Neumann raises what I believe to be fair questions and concerns regarding the NFL Draft news consumption bubble that we live in as fans and writers in light of the Rueben Bain Jr. car crash news. At a minimum, it should make us all pause, take a step back, reflect on, and examine the ecosystem in which we exist.MORE BEARS FROM BLEACHER NATION: Go Ad-Free | Subscribe to the BN Newsletter
