Husband of Michigan woman missing in the Bahamas released from police custody ...Middle East

News by : (NBC Chicago) -

The husband of a missing Michigan woman who authorities believe went overboard ten days ago while boating in the Bahamas is sharing his story after being released from police custody Thursday evening.

Brian Hooker told NBC News that authorities repeatedly questioned him about his wife’s disappearance following his arrest several days ago.

An initial statement by Bahamian authorities shortly after Lynette Hooker went missing included details that Brian Hooker said she fell overboard from their eight-foot dinghy in rough seas with the boat key with her – forcing him to have to paddle to shore.

Search efforts by land and air to locate or recover Lynette Hooker have so far turned up nothing.

In an interview with NBC 5 Investigates last week, Lynette Hooker’s daughter described the relationship between her mother and stepfather as “rocky at best.” Brian Hooker’s attorney rebuked that, saying Hooker denies any wrongdoing and has been cooperative with authorities.

When asked by NBC News Tuesday if police had asked if he harmed his wife, Brian Hooker said: “Of course […] I said, I’ve never harmed Lynette and I never would harm Lynette, and I want to find Lynette.”

More than 10 years ago, a Michigan police report shows Lynette Hooker was accused of striking Brian Hooker in a domestic dispute but prosecutors chose not to pursue the case.

Brian Hooker did not want to discuss that during this interview with NBC News or go into detail about what happened when his wife went missing.

“I cannot share anything. As you can imagine things were chaos and hectic. And I just don’t want to take a chance that anything could interfere with the search as it already has,” Hooker said. “I understand the Bahamian police need to [do] their investigation. And I welcome anything that – any attention – that helps me further my goal of finding Lynette.”

Brian Hooker went on to say that he understands police have a job to do but that his focus was on searching for his missing wife of 25 years.

Bahamian authorities faced a Monday evening deadline to decide whether or not to charge Brian Hooker, and his attorney Terrel Butler said they released him because they have no evidence.

Authorities later told NBC News Monday evening that Brian Hooker was still being investigated despite no charges being filed and that the investigation continues.

During one point in the NBC News interview, Brian Hooker became emotional when discussing his wife.

“It’s been ten days. It’s been a long time. I don’t think I’ve ever been apart from her in 25 years for this long, I don’t like it. She wouldn’t stop and I’m not going to stop,” he said.

Brian Hooker said he was grateful to the sailing community and to the volunteer fire and rescue workers who searched for Lynette Hooker for hours after she initially went missing.

He told NBC News he plans to hire a plane to continue the search.
