The death knell of British breaststroke may have been sounded too soon. With Adam Peaty taking the year off competing after the Paris Olympics, the 2025 British Championships was won by Greg Butler in 59.93, the second-slowest winning time in over a decade.

No swimmer hit the World Aquatics ‘A’ cut in the event, which stood at 59.75, although Butler did compete in Singapore and knocked another four tenths of a second off his best, placing 13th in the semi finals in 59.53.

However, it was the swimmers in 2nd and 3rd last year, Max Morgan (1:00.10) and Filip Nowacki (1:00.28) that most excited British swim fans. They both went on to have successful summers – Morgan being selected in the 50 breast for the senior World Championships in Singapore and winning world junior bronze in the 100 in a time of 59.93, and Nowacki doing the 100/200 breaststroke double at both European Juniors and World Juniors. That included breaking the European Junior Record in the 200 at both meets, as well as the British age group record for 17-year-olds.

Both swimmers had made their mark on the 18-year-olds records as well so far this year. Morgan swam a near-best time of 27.36 in the 50 breast in January, and Nowacki was 2:09.96 in the 200 breast a week later. Both of those had been records held by Adam Peaty, at 27.58 and 2:11.07 respectively.

However, coming into the British Championships there was still one event in which he kept a record – the only junior record he still held. He swam 59.92 at the British Age Group Championships in the summer of 2013, one year before he became a world record holder for the first time in the 50, and two years before he broke 58 seconds in the 100.

Morgan came close in the first circle-seeded heat this morning, clocking 59.98 for his third-ever swim under 1:00, before Nowacki erased Peaty from one section of the history books with a 59.83 in the final heat. They progressed through as the #2 and #3 seeds into the final, flanking the very man whose records they had been chasing.

In the final it was Peaty who took the win, breaking 59 seconds for the first time since the Paris Olympic semi-finals with a time of 58.97, but the two juniors delivered stellar swims of their own. Nowacki touched 2nd in 59.39, his third-fastest time ever after the 59.24 and 59.20 he swam last summer, the latter of which stands as the British 17-years-old record. Morgan knocked nearly four tenths of a second off his PB for 3rd behind him, clocking 59.56 to deliver the third swim of the day under Peaty’s previous record.

With only two spots up for grabs for Europeans, Morgan was the unlucky man out as Great Britain had three men swim under the stiff qualifying time of 59.65. However, with three spots in each event available for the Commonwealth Games, and Nowacki a Jersey native which competes under its own flag, he will be in attendance in Glasgow.

Both swimmers delivered impressive swims tonight, with Nowacki splitting 27.90/31.49 and Morgan splitting 27.86/31.70, both out much faster than Peaty’s 28.34/31.58 from his age group record. With the 50 and the 200 still to go on Wednesday and Saturday respectively, this may not be the last time the junior pair are in the headlines this week.

While Nowacki is 2007-born and not eligible for World Junior Records, Morgan was born in January 2008 and could have the 50 breast record in his sights tomorrow. The current standard is 26.95, set by Germany’s Jan-Malte Grafe at the World Junior Championships last summer, just 0.26 seconds than Morgan’s PB of 27.21.

Morgan does however move up to tie for the 4th-fastest performance ever by a junior.

The pair of Nowacki and Morgan also move up to rank 4th and 10th respectively in the season rankings, with Peaty sitting in second to give GB three swimmers in the top ten.
