Alabama softball secures Iron Bowl series win 3-0 over Auburn ...Middle East

News by : (The Crimson White) -

Alabama softball swept Auburn 3-0 in its weekend series to bring home the Iron Bowl on the diamond.

Game 1: Alabama 1, Auburn 0

Alabama earned its first SEC shutout Friday, taking the opening game of the series 1-0.

Both teams remained runless until the fifth when Kristen White brought in infielder Jena Young off of an RBI single up the middle. Auburn remained off the scoreboard thanks to pitcher Jocelyn Briski who struck out eight batters, allowing only one walk across the game.

“Jocelyn Briski gave us a really good game with eight strikeouts and only one walk,” head coach Patrick Murphy said. “The defense played really well behind her.”

Game 2: Alabama 4, Auburn 0

Riding the momentum from Friday, the Crimson Tide earned its second SEC shutout and its 17th overall shutout of the season, defeating Auburn 4-0.

This victory also marked Murphy’s 500th SEC win, increasing his tally to 500-205 in his 28 years as Alabama’s head coach. Murphy is the first SEC softball coach to reach 500 SEC wins, with no other coach even reaching 400 yet.

Alabama got on the board early during the second game, with an RBI single from Young that brought in infielder Ambrey Taylor. Infielder Brooke Wells continued Young’s momentum into the third and slammed a homer to center.

Auburn found itself unlucky again batting-wise. Pitcher Vic Moten allowed only one hit and three walks across all innings, and Auburn put up another runless loss.

Alabama closed out the game with two more runs: an RBI single from Taylor that brought in utility player Alexis Pupillo and an Auburn fielding error that brought in Taylor.

Game 3: Alabama 9, Auburn 1

Alabama ended the series on a high note, taking the final game 9-1. This is the most runs scored by the Crimson Tide against the Tigers since its 13-3 win in 2015.

The Crimson Tide kicked off scoring even earlier in the final game with Pupillo scoring on a sacrifice fly in the first. Pupillo also was responsible for Alabama’s second run of the day with a homerun in the third.

Wells then sent a homerun to left to make it back-to-back in the third for the Crimson Tide. This is Well’s 18th home run of the season, which ties her for sixth with 2012’s Amanda Locke on the single season homerun record list.

“The goal today, facing the same pitcher we did Friday, was to not make the same mistakes at the plate that we did earlier this weekend, and we did a lot better today,” Murphy said.

In the fourth, Auburn put up its first run of the season with a solo home run. Alabama struck back in the fifth, putting up four more runs to bring the game to 7-1.

Auburn was unable to produce another run, while Young brought in two more for the Crimson Tide in the sixth.

Briski was Alabama’s starting pitcher again in the third game and earned her ninth complete game win of the season. Briski allowed only three hits across all six innings.

“Jocelyn Briski keeps getting better and better. She adds stuff to her arsenal, she makes different pitches move different ways and she’s just outstanding right now,” Murphy said. “Vic [Moten] was incredible yesterday as well, so the pitching staff did their job 100%, and the team defense was really good.”
