Ariana Grande Reveals How Her ‘Focker-in-Law’ Character Is Like Her Late Nonna: A ‘Ballbuster’
In the teaser that dropped Tuesday (April 14) ahead of the sequel’s first full trailer, Grande — still blonde from her time as Glinda in Wicked — gets hooked up to wires for a polygraph conducted by Robert De Niro, who’s played Jack Byrnes in the Meet the Parents franchise since 2000. Ben Stiller, who plays Greg Focker in the movies and also reprises his role in the next installment, stumbles into the interrogation happening in the basement of a home.
In place of the scene’s actual dialogue, text on screen poses the question: “The Focker-in-Law trailer comes out tomorrow?”
Grande’s character, Olivia, braces herself, then answers simply: “Yes.”
“You clearly know your stuff,” De Niro tells her in the clip.
Fans will have to wait until Wednesday (April 15) to see the longer preview of the movie, which is set to hit theaters in November. The lie-detector scene is a sweet callback to a scene in the original Meet the Parents film created more than a quarter-century ago.
The Grammy winner has revealed only a little about her Focker character, but according to her, Olivia is a “ballbuster” — just like Grande’s late nonna. “She is, she can be that way,” the singer-actress also told Variety in November. “But she’s a really good girl.”
The cast of Focker-in-Law wrapped the film late last year, something Grande celebrated at the time with a sweet post on Instagram. Sharing behind-the-scenes snaps with her costars, she wrote, “these past few months have been so, so unimaginably special. i love my Fockers, and i love my Byrnes… so, so very much. i will miss this bunch terribly. see you next november!”
The singer is also seemingly in the process of teasing her eighth album, sparking rumors earlier in April by changing her Brighter Days hotline’s outgoing message to say she’s “counting down the 8s — oops! I mean, the days” until her Eternal Sunshine Tour kicking off in June.
