R.I.P. Dave McGinnis, How the Chargers Could Impact Bears Pick, and Other Tuesday Bullets ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

Day 85 of the Chicago Bears offseason. The bad news is that I got hit with the 1-2 punch of struggling to fall asleep, followed by an awful night of sleep. But the good news is that today is a new day, and it brings the potential for a clean slate. I suppose it would be a good idea to take advantage of it.

The NFL community lost a highly respected coach and broadcaster with the passing of Dave McGinnis:

— Tennessee Titans (@Titans) April 13, 2026 The Athletic’s Dan Pompei has a tremendously well-written obit for Dave McGinnis here. In addition to serving as a radio analyst for the Tennessee Titans, Dave McGinnis had a lengthy coaching career, which included a run coaching Bears linebackers from 1986-1995. There was a brief moment when it was believed that McGinnis would be the next Bears head coach. But instead of replacing Dave Wannstedt in 1999, it fell apart when the team’s hiring before McGinnis and the team had agreed to terms or signed the contract, leading to a chaotic day at Halas Hall. It is one of those moments I’ll always remember as a Chicago sports fan breathlessly following the news via sports radio. Imagine that happening in the social media era. Well, I guess you don’t have ot work too hard to envision it because something similar happened when the Indianapolis Colts’ hiring of Josh McDaniels came unglued in 2018. That news made us go into our memory banks to write this post at BN Bears and unearth a quote from McGinnis as he discussed the similarities and differences between the situations:

“I spent the night in the hotel room, and the next morning, waiting for a call back to come up to finish my interview, the phone rang. I thought it was the Bears’ front office calling, but it was (Leslie) Frazier, who I was going to hire on my staff,” McGinnis recalled. “(Frazier) told me he had another job being offered to him, and that if I would just tell him he had a job with him, that he would turn the other people down. I told him, ‘Les, I don’t have this job yet; I can’t in good faith tell you that.’ He said, ‘Well coach, it’s been on the radio for an hour. You’re the head coach. There’s a press conference at 11.’ This is about 8:30 or 9 in the morning. So, yeah, it’s a whole lot different.”

Sigh. Dave McGinnis really wanted that job. It’s a shame that Michael McCaskey bungled the opportunity, which led to his removal as team president. Now that I’m older and have lived through so many more Bears snafus, I realize even more how colossal of a blunder it was because it had to be in order for Virginia Halas McCaskey to fire one of her sons.

A nugget in this ESPN piece from Matt Miller has the Los Angeles Chargers being expected to prioritize interior offensive linemen and edge rushers in the 2026 NFL Draft. If you’re a Bears fan reading this, you are likely wondering why we should care about what the Chargers are doing. The answer is that the Chargers pick three slots ahead of the Bears in Rounds 1 and 3, as well as two spots ahead of them in Round 2. If the Chargers and Bears have similar draft targets, it could very well impact what the Bears do with their selections. Let’s keep an eye on them and the rumors surrounding Los Angeles and its potential targets. © Orlando Ramirez-Imagn Images Daire Carragher (Pro Football Focus) explores which college offenses best translate to the NFL. This is an interesting concept that I plan on exploring deeper because it could help us unearth some potential Bears targets. ESPN’s Adam Schefter on retirement rumors: “I know a lot has been made about my age this week and how I’m retiring, which by the way, no f*cking chance about that if you don’t mind my language.” (Awful Announcing)

I wonder how much longer Deion Sanders will stay in the college football coaching ranks. Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio points out that attendance for Colardo’s spring game continues to fall. That, in isolation, isn’t a sign that Sanders’ time as a college football head coach is coming to a close sooner rather than later. But it does provide a snapshot of the reality that the allure is fading.
