A 10-year-old child was killed and an 18-year-old man was injured in a house fire in Chicago overnight, the Chicago Police Department said.
About 3:27 a.m., police and firefighters responded to a residential fire in the 10400 block of South Green Street in Washington Heights. A man and a woman were able to exit the house unharmed.
According to police, a 10-year-old was recovered from the home and transported to a nearby hospital where the child was pronounced dead. Firefighters also located an 18-year-old man inside, who was transported to a nearby hospital in critical condition.
A man who identified himself as the child’s grandfather told NBC Chicago the boy was sleeping downstairs, and the parents were sleeping upstairs. The 18-year-old, the grandfather said, has cerebral palsy.
