Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Egyptian Expatriates Badr Abdelatty and EU Special Representative for the Horn of Africa Annette Weber discussed the latest developments in the Horn of Africa and ways of achieving security, stability and development in the region.
During a phone call on Sunday, the pair tackled ongoing preparations for the upcoming Berlin ministerial conference on Sudan, scheduled for next Wednesday, where Abdelatty stressed the need to preserve Sudan’s unity and territorial integrity, support its national institutions, and reject the establishment of any parallel entities, while launching a political process led by Sudanese to end the conflict.
The top Egyptian diplomat underlined the significance of reaching a humanitarian truce as a preliminary step toward a lasting ceasefire, allowing the delivery of humanitarian aid and alleviating the suffering of the Sudanese people.
The foreign minister also condemned all violations against civilians in Sudan, describing them as a flagrant breach of international humanitarian law, and emphasized the need to protect civilians and infrastructure.
In the same context, both sides affirmed the necessity of enhancing coordination and cooperation to achieve security, stability, and development in the Horn of Africa, particularly amid rising regional tensions, in addition to supporting national state institutions.
Abdelatty reiterated Egypt’s commitment to backing Somalia and continuing its capacity-building efforts to consolidate the African country’s security and stability, particularly in confronting terrorism and extremism.
He also called for securing sufficient and sustainable funding for the African Union’s mission for support and stability in Somalia, enabling it to fully carry out its mandate.
