Freshmen standouts in Alabama football spring practices ...Middle East

News by : (The Crimson White) -

Every spring, Alabama fans get to see a new wave of freshmen begin practice with the team, and a few always stand out in the first practices and scrimmages of the season.

Here are the 2026 freshmen who have shown early signs of being ready to contribute in Year 1.

Jorden Edmonds, cornerback

Edmonds follows sophomore Dijon Lee Jr. as the second straight five-star cornerback signed by head coach Kalen DeBoer. Hailing from Georgia, he played both wide receiver and cornerback in high school.

Edmonds boasts a long, athletic frame at 6 feet, 3 inches tall and 188 pounds. Despite playing in a stacked room with Dijon Lee Jr. and Zabien Brown locked in as starters, Edmonds has already impressed in scrimmages.

He had a pick-six in two-on-two work last Saturday, and videos from the scrimmages include highlights of his stickiness in man coverage against elite receiver talent.

“We’ve got to make sure we identify guys that are not only the most talented, but have a maturity to be able to come in and do the work,” defensive coordinator Kane Wommack said of Edmonds and fellow freshman safety Jireh Edwards. “I think both of those guys are very much on pace to do that.”

Although it is unlikely Edmonds will dethrone either Brown or Lee for a starting spot at outside corner, his performance thus far puts him on track to play with the first team this fall, and it would be unsurprising if he eventually rises as high as CB3 on the depth chart.

Trae’shawn Brown, running back

One of Alabama’s latest additions to its 2026 class, Brown was largely overshadowed in discussions about incoming freshmen by five-star phenom Ezavier Crowell. With Crowell limited in the spring due to an injury, however, Brown has made a name for himself as a newcomer to the room.

“He showed some pop. He showed some instinctiveness on how to get that first down,” DeBoer said.

Brown was a consensus three-star recruit coming out of high school in Huntsville, Texas, but his production was enough to match the top-ranked backs in high school last year. In his senior season, Brown rushed for over 1,300 yards and 17 touchdowns, picking up 8.3 yards per carry and 15.7 yards per reception.

Although he didn’t enter the year as an expected contributor, the running back room is more open than it has been in previous seasons. Daniel Hill will be expected to make leaps in his production, but he is far from locking down the starting spot. This could be a season ripe for a dark horse like Brown to rise up and take the job.

Brown was named by DeBoer as one of the most impressive backs on the team after Alabama’s second scrimmage. He then starred in the team’s A-Day scrimmage on Saturday, picking up 25 yards on five carries, which may further his case for the starting job come August.

If he doesn’t start, Brown may still be used as one of several options in the run game if there is no dominant back on the team by the time the fall comes around.

Cederian Morgan, wide receiver

Morgan’s physical profile is arguably the most impressive of any wide receiver on the team. The consensus top-100 recruit has a 6-foot-4, 223-pound frame to go with a 200 meter dash time of 21.74 seconds.

Morgan signed with Alabama after a dominant senior year, in which he posted over 1,400 yards and 16 touchdowns on 17.3 yards per catch.

Despite playing behind a deep wideout room headlined by Brooks and Ryan Coleman-Williams, as well as returner Rico Scott and NC State transfer Noah Rogers, Morgan’s performance in early practices has garnered high praise from his teammates.

“It’s just crazy to see how he’s come in, had his head down, trying to learn from older guys,” Coleman-Williams said. “I know he’s going to continue to work his tail off.”

Morgan impressed in Alabama’s A-Day scrimmage, making three receptions for 74 yards and a touchdown. He made a particularly impressive catch out of the slot on a deep ball thrown by Keelon Russell.

Morgan’s path to early playing time is made easier by the much-needed size he adds to the wide receiver room. Morgan and Derek Meadows are the only scholarship receivers over 6 feet, 2 inches tall, and Morgan’s height combined with his incredible contested-catch ability could make him a go-to option for offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb in the red zone.

Mack Sutter, tight end

After the departure of senior Josh Cuevas, Alabama’s tight end room will be younger and open to competition in 2026. Sophomores Kaleb Edwards and Marshall Pritchett will be expected to make major contributions in the room alongside Oklahoma State transfer Josh Ford and fifth-year senior Danny Lewis Jr.

The team lacks a tight end who has shown the pass-catching upside of Cuevas, however, and Sutter could be the one to fill that vacuum.

On offense, Sutter played both wide receiver and tight end at Dunlap High School in Illinois, preparing him to run more advanced routes than many other tight ends would be used to. In his junior year, he hauled in 35 receptions for 505 yards and seven touchdowns.

The biggest swing factor that will determine Sutter’s playing time is his blocking ability. While he currently profiles as more of a route-running “H” tight end, his physicality playing edge rusher at the high school level suggests he could have the athletic tools to be a skilled blocker in his future. On the defensive side of the ball, Sutter made 36 tackles and six sacks in his junior year.

“I think he’s gonna be a great player,” Edwards said. “He’s young, he’s got a lot of work to do. But so do all of us. He’s gonna be a great player.”
