One person was killed and two others were critically injured in a five-vehicle crash involving a wrong-way driver on the Dan Ryan Expressway on Friday evening, authorities said.
The Total Traffic and Weather Network reported a crash on Interstate 94 before I-90 at around 6:35 p.m., with delays of up to an hour expected.
The Chicago Fire Department confirmed one person was pronounced dead at the scene while two other individuals were rushed to area hospitals in critical condition.
Illinois Department of Transportation traffic cameras in the area showed a large emergency response from CFD personnel and Illinois State Police troopers, along with several vehicles that appeared to be involved, including a heavily damaged SUV.
State police said a vehicle entered the interstate traveling southbound in the northbound lanes near 31st Street and caused multiple collisions. Northbound traffic was being diverted off at 67th Street, state police said.
Additional information about what led up to the crash or when the lanes were expected to reopen hasn’t been released.
Traffic appeared to be at a standstill in the expressway’s northbound lanes, with Google Maps showing heavy backups between West 51st Street and East 78th Street.
