Shubman Gill follows Shreyas Iyer in getting punished by BCCI despite GT’s win over DC at IPL 2026 ...Middle East

Gujarat Titans (GT) finally got their first win of IPL 2026, but the night did not end without consequences for their captain. Shubman Gill has been fined by the BCCI for maintaining a slow over-rate during their one-run win over Delhi Capitals (DC) at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. He was superb with the bat but the tense finish of the game made him only the second captain to get fined due to a slow over-rate this season.

It came in a game that had everything. A 200-plus total, KL Rahul’s brilliance, Rashid Khan’s spell, and a last over that was pure chaos. Gujarat held their nerve when it mattered, with Prasidh Krishna delivering a final-ball dot to seal the win. But amid the celebrations, Gill’s breach of the over-rate rule did not go unnoticed.

The IPL confirmed the penalty a day later. Since it was Gujarat’s first offence of the season, Gill has been fined INR 12 lakh under Article 2.22 of the Code of Conduct.

Shreyas Iyer was the first to be penalised earlier in the season, and not just once. The Punjab Kings captain has already committed two offences, which has seen his fine double and extend to the rest of the playing XI as well.

The rules are simple now. A first offence results in a ₹12 lakh fine for the captain. A second offence doubles that amount and also brings financial penalties for the rest of the XI. Teams are forced to operate with one fewer fielder outside the circle if they fall behind during the game.

The BCCI now aims for matches to finish within 3.5 hours, including both innings and breaks. If the bowling team does not start the 20th over by the scheduled time, they must bring an extra fielder inside the 30-yard circle (allowing only four fielders outside) for the remainder of the innings.
