The mother of an 18-year-old who was killed in a hit-and-run while biking over the weekend in Chicago called the driver who could be seen on surveillance video fleeing after the crash “heartless” on Wednesday, hours before dozens gathered for a vigil where the deadly crash occurred.
Around 7:30 p.m., dozens gathered for the vigil with signs calling for justice for Damian Gomez at the busy intersection where neighbors say several crashes have occurred over the years.
“Riding a bike should not be a death sentence,” one sign said. Others said, “silence protects the killer” and “street safety=life safety.”
Among those at the vigil was Gomez’s mother, Claudia Torres.
“He just left the car like nothing, like he didn’t hurt anybody when he knows my son was out there lying on the ground dead,” Gomez’s mother, Claudia Torres, said. “He’s a heartless person. And I want justice for my son.”
Gomez was hit and killed while biking on Sunday around 1:20 a.m. on West 63rd Street near South Kedzie Avenue, on the border of Chicago’s Marquette Park and Chicago Lawn neighborhoods.
Police say an unidentified man who was speeding in a red SUV eastbound on West 63rd Street ran a red light and struck Gomez.
After striking Gomez, the driver crashed into a silver vehicle that was traveling southbound on South Kedzie Avenue with a solid green light before fleeing the scene, police said.
Gomez, who delivers food on his bike, was on the way home from working when he was struck and killed.
A memorial of balloons, candles and other mementos were left behind by friends and family of Gomez at the intersection.
Surveillance video obtained by NBC Chicago shows the hit-and-run crash, though the footage is so disturbing we are not sharing it.
Video also shows the driver running off after the crash, leaving behind Gomez and a critically injured woman who was a passenger in the car he was driving.
