Giant Dipper reopens as Belmont in Bloom festival continues in Mission Beach ...Middle East

MISSION BEACH – After six weeks of rehab, one of the most iconic structures in Mission Beach is back in business.

The Giant Dipper roller coaster, one of San Diego’s favorite amusement rides, has resumed operating at Belmont Park after being out of commission for a month and a half to have wood throughout the coaster’s 100-year-old infrastructure replaced.

“It went under a $1.6 million rehab,” said Sarah Abelson, spokesperson for PE Management Group, which has owned Belmont Park since 2012. “Because it’s over 100 years old, at least every few years it undergoes a major rehab. This is just to ensure that it feels like a smooth ride and we can try to give our guests the best experience when riding the historical Giant Dipper.”

“There’s a specific team that comes on site during the rehab to do the work,” she added. “It is just to ensure that the track is smoother for our riders.”

The wooden coaster, which attracts more than 553,700 guests annually, reopened in mid-March, Abelson said.

Those coming to ride the roller coaster will also see a brand-new addition to the park. A recently-built play area now sits adjacent to the park’s Shipwreck Cove amusement ride. The Shipwreck Cove Play Area, as it’s called, is a kids’ zone that opened about four months ago after about a year of planning and construction.

“It’s essentially a free play structure that’s open and designed for kids 5 to 12,” Abelson said. “And it’s open and available for usage during regular park hours.”

“It’s our first free play structure,” she added. “It’s fun for kids who kind of want a break between going on the rides, to be able to just come and run around a little bit.

“It looks like a big ship, at the top of it, it has a Captain Hook-esque character,” she said. “And you can actually see it from different points of view throughout the park. It’s pretty high, so you can see it from multiple angles.”

For those either not into amusement park rides or want a change of pace from them, Belmont Park also has an upcoming event that might be to their liking: The annual Belmont in Bloom festival runs through May 31.

An annual event now in its fourth year, the festival features vibrant floral installations, live music, interactive performers, and limited-time food and beverages across the park.

Among the planned events is a K-Pop Stars Dance and Sing Along on Saturday, April 11, from 11 a.m.–2 p.m. Fans can enjoy live performances, meet-and-greet opportunities, and family-friendly activities like face painting and bubble artists.

Additionally, seasonal food and beverage specials are scheduled to be available every day at select locations in the park.

General admission tickets are available for purchase at belmontpark.com.
