Alabama softball run-rules South Alabama 8-0 in midweek matchup ...Middle East

Alabama softball continued its momentum from its top 10 series win over Texas into its midweek matchup against South Alabama, run-ruling the Jaguars 8-0 in a quick five innings. This marks Alabama’s 15th shutout and its 12th run-rule victory of the season.

“We’ve said from day one, ‘the best way to respect your opponent is to get after them and play your best,’’ head coach Patrick Murphy said. “We had some good hitting and played some really good team defense. I’m pleased.”

Freshman pitcher Kaitlyn Pallozzi started in the circle for Alabama, only allowing South Alabama to get to base once in the first inning.

The first inning went scoreless for both teams. Alabama finally put the first run on the board in the bottom of the second after an RBI by infielder Salen Hawkins that brought home catcher Marlie Giles.

The Jaguars pulled off two walks in the third but were unable to make it home, going out of the inning scoreless once again.

After kicking off the scoring in the second, Alabama added another run to its tally in the third with a single through the right by outfielder Ana Roman that brought in utility player Alexis Pupillo, while South Alabama remained scoreless.

In the bottom of the fourth, Alabama got on base early with a walk from Pupillo. Shortly after, infielder Brooke Wells smacked a home run to right center, bringing home Pupillo and outfielder Kristen White.

“She’s [Wells is] one of those kids that she might fall off a pitch, and it doesn’t look very good, and then the next pitch, she immediately makes a huge adjustment,” Murphy said. “And she did that. I think she fouled it off into their dugout, the pitch before, and then she gets one that she loves.”

This was Wells’ 16th home run of the season, which ties her with infielders Ashley Prange and Leona Lafaele for 10th place for single-season home run records for the team.

With two outs, Giles hit a double to right field, allowing outfielder Larissa Preuitt to score and ending the fourth 7-0.

Freshman pitcher Vic Moten came in in relief in the fifth and allowed no hits. Alabama topped off the fifth with a single to left by Wells that brought in White.

“A two-hitter and a shutout with two freshmen on the mound — I’ll take it all day long,” Murphy said.

Alabama softball will return to the diamond this weekend against Auburn at Jane B. Moore Field in Auburn. Game 1 of the series can be seen on SEC+ Network.
