As for what it means, given the Cubs’ rough performance from the fill-in outfielders thus far in the big leagues, I am not sure it’s going to mean too much with Seiya Suzuki returning on Friday. The Cubs likely aren’t going to dump anyone from the big league roster just yet, and even if they swapped someone out for Alcantara today, they’d have to make another move after just three games anyway. Unless there’s a new injury, I think the Cubs probably keep things status quo for at least a few more weeks, and then reevaluate the outfield picture.

Hopefully, in that time, Alcantara, 23, continues to rake. With both Suzuki and Ian Happ slated for free agency after the season, the best case scenario for 2026 is that Alcantara somehow gets a shot to show, by the end of the year, that he’s a legitimate option to take over an outfield spot in 2027 if the Cubs need him to.

I cannot wait to see where he ends up by the end of this season.
