Diamondbacks use ABS challenge to score 3 runs before losing to Mets ...Middle East

Sport by : (Arizona sports) -

The Arizona Diamondbacks looked like they wasted a golden opportunity to get back in Tuesday’s game. With the bases loaded and two outs in the fifth inning, Adrian Del Castillo struck out looking to end the threat against the New York Mets.

But then, Del Castillo tapped on his helmet to signal a challenge.

The called strike three pitch was inside, giving Del Castillo a lifeline he took advantage of. The designated hitter lined a two-run single to right field off Mets reliever Huascar Brazoban, tying the game. Nolan Arenado followed with a bloop double to plate the go-ahead run, 3-2.

It was a display of how the new rule can change the outlook of a baseball game, although for the Diamondbacks, it was all for naught.

The Mets earned a 4-3 win in 10 innings, as the Diamondbacks (5-6) struggled to find the big knock after the fifth inning.

Reliever Jonathan Loaisiga picked up a second straight blown save, while Paul Sewald was tagged with the loss on a walk-off single from pinch hitter Ronny Mauricio.

10th inning loss

The Diamondbacks entered Queens coming off an extra-inning win on Sunday over the Atlanta Braves.

After failing to score the ghost runner in the top half of the 10th inning on Tuesday, Sewald entered. Had Arizona held on, the top of the order would have had an opportunity in the 11th with New York having already used closer Devin Williams.

With a runner on third and one out, Sewald jumped ahead 0-2 on Mauricio, making his first MLB plate appearance of the season as New York’s replacement for the injured Juan Soto on the roster.

Catcher Gabriel Moreno set up high above the strike zone for a third straight pitch, but Sewald missed his spot and gave Mauricio a cookie over the middle. He laced it over right fielder Corbin Carroll’s head.

The D-backs have played six one-run games already this season and are 3-3.

Arizona’s offense has scored three runs or fewer seven times in 11 games.

Zac Gallen grinds through 5 innings

Gallen walked four batters and allowed five hits on Tuesday, but he managed to avoid the back-breaking hit to push through five innings.

The Mets started the game with three straight hits but only mustered a run. Gallen walked the nine-hole hitter with two outs in the second, and Francisco Alvarez scored on a Francisco Lindor double with the help of a throwing error from Carroll.

Gallen threw 41 pitches in the first two innings but he only allowed one more hit over the next three innings.

Gallen’s pitching line: five innings, two runs (one earned), five hits, five strikeouts and four walks (three with two outs). He threw 95 pitches but only 54 strikes, and his season ERA dropped to 3.00.

In the swirling wind and against a team that has hit well against four-seam fastballs this year, Gallen threw a higher clip of cutters, changeups and sinkers (runners) than what is typical for him. He drew seven swings-and-misses with the cutter and changeup as he found ways to produce outs and leave the game in line for a win.

Ryan Thompson and Juan Morillo delivered 1-2-3 innings in the sixth and seventh. Kevin Ginkel also threw a scoreless frame in the ninth to force extras, with the help of a sliding catch from center fielder Jorge Barrosa.

Challenge from Del Castillo

The Automated Ball-Strike challenge system is debuting this year in MLB, and Tuesday presented the Diamondbacks a perfect time to use it.

The D-backs have been clear on their guidelines for when to challenge pitches since each team gets two per game and can keep them if successful. That was a moment where the game was teetering, and Del Castillo’s challenge ultimately changed Mets starter Freddy Peralta’s pitching line from 4.2 scoreless innings to 4.2 innings with three earned runs.

Diamondbacks’ next game

The Diamondbacks will play a second straight game moved up in start time due to the cold and wind on Wednesday, as first pitch is at 1:10 p.m. MST.

Ryne Nelson will look for a better outing than his first two of the season, while left-hander David Peterson will pitch for New York.
