Cubs starting pitcher Cade Horton will require a season-ending surgery following a torn ulnar collateral ligament, manager Craig Counsell announced on Tuesday.
Horton had recently returned to Chicago for tests on his right arm after being forced to leave his second outing of 2026 after he felt discomfort throwing a pitch. The Cubs placed Horton on the 15-day injured list with a strained forearm on Sunday.
Counsell did not say which procedure Horton will undergo and said no date for the surgery has been set so far.
The 24-year-old looked to the dugout for assistance after throwing a 93.8 mph fastball — slower than normal — to Cleveland’s Bo Naylor on Friday. Horton was pulled from the game for right-hander Colin Rea.
“I had some tightness in my wrist and as the game went on, it went into my forearm,” Horton said following the game. “I wanted to err on the cautious side and not hurt anything else. I just wanted to be smart about it and make a smart decision.”
Horton went 11-4 with a 2.67 ERA as a rookie last season and was a finalist for National League Rookie of the Year.
He posted an 11-4 record in 23 appearances last season, and was a key contributor to a Cubs pitching staff that drove the team to their first playoff appearance since the 2020 season.
While he had a dazzling rookie campaign for the Cubs, it was cut short by a fractured rib that he suffered near the tail end of the regular season, leaving him unable to pitch in the postseason.
